Sydney Sweeney can never be accused of being shy and retiring when putting herself out there on the big screen, and she has made it clear that she just wants to give people more of what they want – such as a sequel to her new erotic thriller, The Housemaid.
From director Paul Feig, The Housemaid is a dark but comical sexy thriller that has Sweeney’s signature all over it. Now in theaters, and pleasing many with a B CinemaScore to add to its audience Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%, the film sees the Euphoria star playing Millie, a woman who accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for a wealthy couple, Nina and Andrew Winchester, played, respectively, by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. While the job seems to be perfect at the start, it doesn’t take long for seduction, secrets, and some bloody confrontations to take center stage and turn a dream job into a dark and dangerous nightmare.
For Sweeney, the original novel by Freida McFadden, is what initially drew her in, as she told Variety at the film’s premiere.
“It was juicy, it was delicious. I could not put the book down. I remember I opened it, and you know when you’re like, ‘I’m going to open this, read a couple of chapters and then go do something else,’ I did not move from my seat the moment I opened it until I finished. It was just so good. The characters, the twists, the turns, all of it, so I knew I really wanted to be a part of.”
Now it looks like Sweeney and Feig are hoping that the film does well enough to get a sequel greenlit. “We want to be able to give the people what they want,” Sweeney said. “This is such an amazing community of book lovers, and we would love to do another film.” Feig added, “Let’s just hope this one does well because we’re ready to do another one.”
Paul Feig Says Sydney Sweeney Was “One of My Heroes”
By the time The Housemaid came to Paul Feig, Sydney Sweeney had already signed on to the role of Millie. For the Bridesmaids director, this was perfectly fine as he found her “amazing” to work with. He said:
“It was amazing. She’s so lovely and so easy to work with, and the most professional person I have ever met. She shows up on set and is ready to go, and is prepared, and brings such an extra level to everything she does. She’s one of my heroes, I’ll tell ya.”
Feig isn’t the only one hyping Sweeney in the movie, as her costar Seyfried was also on hand to add more praise, saying:
“We were doing one of those light camera tests, and we realized right away that we’re the same shoe size and the exact same height, and we thought that was really interesting. And I think it was just the fact that we were so in love with the book, and we couldn’t believe we were actually making this movie, that we related right away. Also, we have the same process. She doesn’t take herself too seriously, and neither do I. I think that’s where the fun comes in.”
The Housemaid opened in cinemas this weekend, and looks set to land a top three spot at the domestic box office behind Avatar: Fire & Ash and animated movie David.
