Supernova Theory About SpaceGodzilla’s Role Would Change The Entire Direction Of The Monsterverse

It’s universally acknowledged that Godzilla’s cosmic doppelganger SpaceGodzilla will be the primary villain of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova when it blasts its way into theaters in 2027. Naturally, G-fans the world over have dropped theories about virtually every aspect about SpaceGodzilla: where he came from, how he arrives on the Earth (or Hollow Earth), and what he’ll actually look like.

While his origins and how Kong can keep up with such a powerful monster might be the most hotly debated topics, some of the most intriguing theories revolve around what SpaceGodzilla’s role will be in the grand scheme of the Monsterverse. Unsubstantiated rumors circulating about the movie’s plot have fueled some wild theories, but one of the most plausible theories changes how the Monsterverse’s overarching narrative will move forward.

A Theory States SpaceGodzilla Will Be A Herald For Something Far Worse

So far, the various movies of the Monsterverse have dealt with individual villains with limited connections to each other. Ghidorah’s severed head was of course used to control Mechagodzilla until the dragon’s mind hijacked the robotic kaiju, but for the most part, each villain appeared, then been dispatched in the same movie without setting anything else up.

The latest theory about SpaceGodzilla could buck that trend entirely, and send the Monsterverse hurtling towards its own endgame. It states that SpaceGodzilla is not in fact the big bad that he has been painted as, but is instead a herald for something much more deadly and menacing. Like Marvel’s Silver Surfer before Galactus or DC’s Steppenwolf before Darkseid, the theory states that SpaceGodzilla, as powerful as he is, is no more than a precursor to the actual big bad of the Monsterverse.

In SpaceGodzilla’s original (and only) cinematic appearance in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, his end goal was to reform the Earth into his own crystalline domain and establish himself as the dominant ruler. In Supernova, his goal could be to act as exterminator, wiping out the Titans and humans on Earth who might oppose the villain behind him.

SpaceGodzilla Came Before The Heisei Era’s Big Bad In His First Appearance

There is some semblance of precedent for this theory, as SpaceGodzilla actually appeared in the movie just before the monster that many G-fans consider to be the “final boss” of the Heisei Era of the Godzilla franchise. While the two villains were entirely unrelated, Godzilla battled the demonic Destoroyah following his victory over SpaceGodzilla, ultimately losing his life in the battle as he suffered from what amounted to a nuclear heart attack and meltdown.

Naturally, Monsterverse fans would assume Destoroyah as the endgame for the Godzilla X Kong saga, making SpaceGodzilla the harbinger of Destoroyah’s arrival. However, Destoroyah’s origins in his original appearance were not space-related, as he was born from a colony of ancient crustaceans whose evolution was sped up and mutated by the detonation of the Oxygen Destroyer from the original Godzilla.

The Oxygen Destroyer has been used in the Monsterverse, so the seeds have already been planted for Destoroyah. However, I think that the more likely final villain that SpaceGodzilla would herald would have to be another cosmic Godzilla villain, meaning any of Hedorah, Gigan, Orga, or Monster X/Keizer Ghidorah. The obvious choice there would be Monster X, but given that the trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 just introduced us to “Titan X”, that also seems unlikely.

The obvious alternative that some classic Godzilla fans might recoil from would be the introduction of a brand-new Titan, like the Shimo, Skar King, or the MUTOs before them. An ultimate cosmic foe that nobody has ever seen before would be an exciting addition to Godzilla lore, especially given the success that Legendary has had in inventing and introducing new monsters to the Monsterverse.

The setup of a big bad would be entirely new ground for the Monsterverse, and would be the first major cross-movie narrative that includes a legitimate setup. The Ghidorah-to-Mechagodzilla connection was never really teased aside from a Godzilla: King of the Monsters post-credits scene, but even that didn’t actually tease Mechagodzilla. If Godzilla X Kong: Supernova positions SpaceGodzilla as a herald, there would have to be some major narrative threads laid out to set up the final battle.
