As the highly-anticipated reboot of the DC Universe, Superman will introduce a new world full of heroes and villains from the source material. In addition to featuring the iconic Kryptonian and his super-genius archenemy, Lex Luthor, another ultra-powerful foe will battle with Superman for the fate of Metropolis.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn talked about one of the most slept-on parts of his upcoming film, Superman. Yes, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is the main villain for David Corenswet’s titular hero, but another, more physically imposing foe is in his sights. Lex has a mysterious person called Ultraman at his disposal, and while the character is clearly very powerful, his true identity has been kept secret. In the comics, Ultraman is often portrayed as an alternate universe version of Superman. When asked about the secretive role, Gunn had this to say:
EW: “Two characters that I still have a question mark over are the Hammer of Boravia and this Ultra Man figure. Am I on the right track in assuming Ultra Man is Luthor’s attempt to recreate a Superman kind of figure? Am I really off?”
James Gunn: “It’s close. Yeah, I think that’s close. Ultra Man is sort of Lex’s thug and is pretty powerful.”
More to come.
