Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Stranger Things Finale
The finale of Stranger Things has given fans plenty to discuss – and argue over – on social media, and one of the biggest points of contention is what exactly happened to Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven at the end of the series. Now, the Duffer brothers have broken their silence on the fate of the character and what that whole scenario described by “storyteller” Mike really means.
Stranger Things has been one of the biggest TV shows of all time, which obviously means that the final episode was going to please some people and annoy others. In act three of the series finale, Vecna and the Mind Flayer were defeated – in true Stephen King tribute fashion – and the Upside Down was destroyed, but not before Eleven put herself within the blast zone and died along with every connection between the wormhole and the Earth.
However, in the final scene, Mike Wheeler was coaxed by his friends to explain an alternate ending in which Eleven actually survived thanks to some projection from Kali rendering what everyone – including viewers – saw a lie. Is that really what happened though? The Duffers have now clarified exactly what the ending really means. Matt Duffer told Netflix:
“What we wanted to do was confront the reality of what her situation was after all of this and how could she live a normal life. Mike is the optimist of the group and has chosen to believe in that story.”
Ross Duffer followed this up, adding, “She lives on in their hearts, whether that’s real or not. For us and our writers, we didn’t want to take her powers away. She represents magic in a lot of ways and the magic of childhood. For our characters to move on and for the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down to come to a close, Eleven had to go away.”
“We thought it would be beautiful if our characters continued to believe in that happier ending even if we didn’t give them a clear answer to whether that’s true or not. The fact that they’re believing in it, we just thought it was such a better way to end the story and a better way to represent the closure of this journey and their journey from children to adults.”
Eleven Surviving ‘Stranger Things’ Finale Is Only a Fantasy
While Mike and the rest of his friends choose to believe his account of events, in reality, it is clear that Eleven did perish in the destruction of the Upside Down and there is no way of getting around it. While Mike’s elaboration of the way her “sister” Kali could have saved her through way of projection, there are several reasons it could have been impossible for her to make the hologram of Eleven appear to everyone.
Even if it is believed that Kali was not dead when Eleven left her, she was still in the exact place the C4 explosives were positioned by Hopper and Murray, meaning that as soon as the explosion occurred, her body would have been evaporated in the blast. This instantly removes her from the equation when it comes to the idea that the Eleven being swept away in the debris was some kind of projection and not the real character.
While the Duffers still did not outright say the words, “Eleven is dead,” they have said enough to show that Mike’s explanation of how Eleven could have survived is there for those viewers who, like Mike and the gang, choose to believe that this alternate scenario instead.
