Stan Collymore shuts down the idea of Liverpool just winning the Premier League under Arne Slot is a big letdown. The Former Liverpool forward highlighted that the Premier League title is the “gold standard” compared to other cup competition trophies.
Liverpool have faced scrutiny after losing the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle United and getting eliminated in the Champions League. The Reds continued the tradition of taking every competition seriously which they started under the legendary former manager Jurgen Klopp.
However, no one expected the Reds to achieve anything during this season’s transition as Slot succeeded Klopp as the boss. British football pundits argued that the departure of Klopp is emotionally too heavy for Liverpool while Slot lacks high-level experience.
Furthermore, many like Gary Neville predicted that Liverpool would struggle to finish in the Premier League top four this season. They cited Arsenal after Arsene Wenger and Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson as examples of clubs struggling after a legendary manager leaves.
Slot proved that there are exceptions to everything despite the lack of transfer activities, focusing on the squad he inherited. The Dutchman used his tactical acumen and the idea of balancing the risk and reward factor to boost the squad.
In his column for CaughtOffside, Collymore shrugged off the idea that Liverpool winning just the Premier League title is disappointing. He said:
“Any fan at the start of the season would have said that the Premier League is the most important competition for Liverpool – and while they could collapse and miss out on winning it, I really don’t think that will happen, even if they need to buck up their ideas as their performances in recent weeks have been poor.
Talk of quadruples, trebles are not for me, I will leave that to influencers to speak about. Even a double is a very difficult thing to do in football, and many clubs have not achieved it over the years in English football. Regardless, the Premier League title is the gold standard for me, and if Liverpool can win it by even 3-6 points, it would be an outstanding achievement, especially with Arne Slot being a rookie manager in England.”
Hatred is blind: Premier League becomes collateral damage in Liverpool badmouthing
Liverpool fans criticised the Mirror Football’s X post where they addressed the club’s elimination from all the cup competitions. They wrote:
“With just the Premier League left to play for, is the season now becoming a disappointment? “
The notion that only winning the Premier League is disrespectful to one of the biggest major trophies in club football. It gets even worse because no one believed Liverpool could achieve this success in Slot’s first season with Arsenal and Manchester City as favourites.
Furthermore, Liverpool operates under a limited transfer budget compared to other Premier League clubs yet they challenge for every trophy. It is not that the Reds arrogantly believe that they can achieve the quadruple, rather it is the philosophy to respect every competition.
The winner of the Carabao Cup receives £100,000 which is a meagre sum in modern professional football. Nevertheless, Liverpool have always respected the competition as the most successful club to participate in the Carabao Cup.
Meanwhile, other high-spending clubs prefer to focus on the competitions that bring more revenue despite having a massive squad depth. Liverpool fans are happy to see the club take these competitions seriously despite the benefit of focusing on major trophies.
The British media should remember these minor details, or they risk tainting the reputation of many prestigious competitions. Liverpool fans are delighted to see Slot potentially secure their 20th Premier League title.
However, the competition is not finished until it is mathematically impossible for the second-placed Arsenal to reach the Reds. With nine games to go, Liverpool must put their recent nightmare behind them, focusing on what is ahead.
