Legendary director Steven Spielberg has joined the hallowed ranks of EGOT winners, meaning he’s now won at least one of each of the entertainment industry’s four major awards: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. The Grammy was the last to come; he’s won it for his role producing the Disney+ documentary Music by John Williams, which won Best Music Film at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.
Music by John Williams is what it sounds like: a look at the life and career of John Williams, who has composed music for a great many iconic movies over the years, including Star Wars, Superman, and the Harry Potter films. Williams composed a lot of his most beloved scores for Steven Spielberg movies, including Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and the Indiana Jones films. It’s very fitting that when Spielberg finally wins a Grammy, it’s for a movie that honors the work of a man who has contributed so much to his own art.
Also taking home Grammys for The Music of John Williams are Laurent Bouzereau, Sara Bernstein, Laurent Bouzereau, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Meredith Kaulfers, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Justin Wilkes, and of course John Williams himself. The movie beat out other nominees like Devo, Live At The Royal Albert Hall, Relentless, and Piece by Piece.
What other awards has Steven Spielberg won?
So if a Grammy was the last award Steven Spielberg had to win to achieve EGOT status, what did he win before? Obviously, after over 50 years spent making fantastic movies, Spielberg has won the Best Director statue at least a couple of times: once for Saving Private Ryan and another time for Schindler’s List, which also won Best Picture. And he’s been nominated many times beyond that. Spielberg actually holds the record for most Best Picture nominations with 14.
Weirdly, Spielberg has actually won more Emmy awards than he has Oscars. Between his work on Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Taken, and A Pinky & the Brain Christmas, he has four Emmys. He also got a Tony award in 2022 for his work producing the musical A Strange Loop.
All 7 Steven Spielberg War Movies, Ranked
Steven Spielberg’s war movies are all miles above other genre flicks, but they vary slightly in awesomeness.
As for John Williams, he has five Oscars, two more than his friend Steven. He also has three Emmys and an impressive 27 Grammys, including the new one for The Music of John Williams. A Tony eludes him, but if he had a mind to, Williams could probably write the music for a Broadway show and join Spielberg in the EGOT circle, where they’ll hang out with other EGOT winners like Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis, and Elton John.
