Steven Spielberg is known as one of the greatest film directors of all time, having directed such important works as Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, as well as blockbusters like Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Indiana Jones, and more.
As one of the most critically acclaimed directors of our time, one might think Steven prefers more astute activities, but it turns out that he’s not opposed to binging a reality show.
Steven did an interview with Boston University after receiving an honorary doctorate from the university, which was reported on by Far Out, and as they discussed Steven’s favorite media, he let it slip that he loves reality TV, especially this one particular show.

Steven said that the quality of television had risen so high, “the best writing today is being done for television,” he told the interviewer, specifically mentioning prolific television writers like Aaron Sorkin and David Kelley. Then, he shifted to unscripted entertainment, saying that, surprisingly, he watches a lot of reality TV.
“It’s a guilty pleasure. My favorite show on the air right now is Deadliest Catch.”
Steven saying that Deadliest Catch was his “favorite” show is high praise. This man knows what he’s talking about when it comes to story-telling, high-stakes narratives, and tension-filled action scenes, all of which Deadliest Catch delivers.
Tom Hanks is also a big fan of Deadliest Catch.
What Steven Learned From Deadliest Catch
Steven Revealed What He Thinks When Watching
Could a high-profile filmmaker like Steven possibly learn anything by watching his favorite reality show? Well, according to him, he only has one thought while watching.
“The only thought process I have when I’m watching Deadliest Catch is I hope I’m never caught at sea in a storm.”
Steven’s logical response indicates that while he enjoys the heart-stopping adventures of crab fishermen in perilous situations at sea, he’s in it for the entertainment value, not the life lessons, which is fair.
Steven Spielberg Dabbled In Reality TV
Steven Produced A Short-Lived Reality Show
Given Steven’s love of reality TV, it’s not surprising that he once dabbled in the medium himself. In 2007, Steven produced On The Lot, a one-season film-making competition reality show that aired on Fox.
It saw Steven team up with other producers like Mark Burnett, whose name is surely known among reality fans, as he’s responsible for shows like Survivor, The Apprentice, Shark Tank, The Voice, and more.
With two powerhouse producers like Steven and Mark at the helm, there were high hopes for On The Lot. The show boasted film heavyweights like Carrie Fisher and Garry Marshall as guest judges, and produced a winner, Will Bigham, but sadly, the show didn’t last.
Sounds like the extent of Steven’s love of reality TV will remain as a viewer, which is something most can relate to.
Deadliest Catch season 21 will premiere on Friday, August 1, at 8 p.m. EDT on Discovery.
