Star Wars fans, don’t expect any details about Star Wars: Starfighter to be spoiled any time soon. The latest director to enter the Star Wars
franchise and march to the tune of John Williams’ signature score has revealed a very important lesson that he learned when making Stranger Things. Shawn Levy has been playing a key part behind the camera since the beginning of the Netflix fantasy horror hit, and now that he’s been announced to tackle one of the upcoming Star Wars movies, Levy says that the very popular series taught him to stay quiet and not spill any details.
The director, also famous for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine and the Night at the Museum franchise, spoke to Variety during the premiere of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the play that serves as a prequel to the Netflix show. Levy was recently announced as the director of Star Wars: Starfighter, the Ryan Gosling-led Star Wars project to be added to the franchise roster. He was careful not to share more about the mysterious movie, something he says he learned while working on the show:
“Stranger Things taught me to keep my mouth shut. So I’m really grateful for that because I kept the Ryan Gosling news and the title and release date of my Star Wars movie pretty damn quiet for a long time. So I’m quite proud of myself and grateful to Stranger Things for making me shut my mouth.”

Levy is keeping his hands busy with Stranger Things
Season 5, the conclusion of the ’80s-based show with a very strong following. Even though Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for the finale, The First Shadow is apparently the companion piece that fans should witness right away. Levy agrees, and highlights the work by the play’s producer and director, Sonia Friedman and Stephen Daldry, respectively:
“When you have people like that who are at the top of their game in the theater world, we knew we would be in good hands. You just want to bet on that talent and bet on those instincts. And we were immensely rewarded because they found a way to take the iconic stories that we established on the show and find depth and entry points that aren’t in the show. So it sits side by side as a companion piece.”

Star Wars announcements are always divisive. There’s just no way to satisfy all fans of the franchise created by George Lucas, with recent projects having been met with the usual mixed reactions. Star Wars: Starfighter will likely also follow this trend that becomes more visible in the rocky territory that is social media. But could Star Wars: Starfighter be the game-changer that unites everybody?
Ryan Gosling is a huge star, not something unheard of in the Star Wars saga, and while Levy’s experience in movies falls mostly under the comedy spectrum, given the right script, he can step into other genres with ease. The duo will face the hardships of a non-Skywalker storyline, as Starfighter is reportedly a standalone project and with have plenty of challenges coming its way. We’ll just have to wait until it opens on May 27, 2027.
