Split Fiction has taken the gaming world by storm, and it’s looking to replicate that success in Hollywood as a movie adaptation has already been announced just two weeks after the game was released. The video game is developed by Hazelight Studio, who have produced other successful couch co-op games like It Takes Two and A Way Out, and sold over 2 million units in its first week. Hype for the project couldn’t be higher, as couples, friends, and siblings around the world are getting frustrated at each other while playing the game together, with discussions about Split Fiction and the renewed future of co-op gaming dominating social media.
Per Variety, the Split Fiction movie is currently being developed by Story Kitchen. The movie is in the earliest stages of development, as the company is currently assembling writers, the cast, and a director. Once the creative team has been assembled, the film will be sold as a package to potential studio buyers. Details about the movie remain a mystery. It is unclear if the project will be a live-action film, or if it will be animated.

The project is currently in the works at Netflix.
Like many of Hazelight’s games, Split Fiction requires two players and implements the co-operation between the players into the story. Written by Josef Fares and Sebastian Johansson, the game follows Mio and Zoe, two writers who become trapped in a simulation of the worlds they have created, after a mysterious villain attempts to steal their ideas. The game bounces between fantasy and sci-fi, which will be incredibly exciting to see on the big screen.
‘It Takes Two’ Is Also Getting a Movie
It’s once again becoming a great time to be a fan of couch co-op games. Split Fiction isn’t the only Hazelight co-op game to get a big-screen adaptation. It was announced that It Takes Two (or “Divorce Simulator,” as fans unofficially call it) is getting a live-action film. While Split Fiction has yet to land a studio, much of the leg work for It Takes Two is already complete. Amazon is developing the movie with Seven Bucks Productions and dj2 Entertainment. Dwayne Johnson was rumored to star in the film, as he is producing through Seven Bucks, but this has not been confirmed.
It Takes Two follows May and Cody, a married couple going through a divorce. When their daughter wishes for them not to split up, they are both magically transported into two dolls she has created, and have to learn to work together again to get back to their real bodies. It Takes Two‘s movie is being written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who previously worked on Sonic the Hedgehog and its first sequel.
With It Takes Two and Split Fiction both getting movie adaptations, it begs one question from fans who have played the games: will tickets only be sold in pairs so you have to see it with a friend? No release dates have been revealed for either It Takes Two or Split Fiction.
