Ahead of the highly-anticipated release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 this weekend, the studio has already hedged their bets on the future of the franchise. The upcoming sequel, which is set to beat out Disney’s The Lion King prequel at the box office, will be introducing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) to worldwide audiences on the big screen. But Sonic won’t be ending in a trilogy, as Paramount plans to release another sequel in the video game adaptation movie series.
Variety exclusively reports that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is in the works and Paramount Pictures is looking to release the film in theaters in spring 2027. Details on the next film, plot-related or otherwise, have yet to be released. Jeff Fowler, who had directed the previous three installments, is widely expected to return behind the camera, but nothing has been confirmed on that front. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will directly continue the storyline in Sonic 3, as well as follow up the post-credits scenes that tease the future of the cinematic universe.
With an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has already been breaking franchise-best records. Although audiences have yet to give their verdict on the film, every sign points towards the new sequel being the most successful of them all. Already regarded as one of the best video game movies ever, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 looks to live up the high expectations of the loyal fanbase, who have waited decades for their favorite blue hedgehog to make it mainstream in theaters.
