It’s fun seeing actors being brutally honest about their reasons for starring in a new movie, and Jim Carrey is the latest overly-honest actor. Following Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey announced he was semi-retired from acting. In April 2022, Carey said, “I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” believing “I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.” The beloved comedian and actor said it would take a “script that’s written in gold ink” to bring him back. Well, here we are, as Carrey returns as Doctor Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. But it wasn’t the script that brought him back.
Speaking to AP Entertainment, Carrey reflected on his past comments and explained what brought him out of retirement, and it’s hilariously relatable. When asked about the “gold ink” quote, Carrey joked “That might’ve been hyperbole, yeah.” For a brief moment, Jim Carrey’s PR training kicked in, and the actor said he returned because of the quality of the script. He explained:
“I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch.”
But Carrey couldn’t help but earn a few laughs for his actual reason. Underneath the thespian facade lies a man who enjoys collecting fine art and modern design. To paraphrase that one Vine from years ago, “He makes bad financial decisions.” The kind of art Carrey collects is notoriously expensive, and playing Doctor Robotnik next to a CGI blue hedgehog is an easy way to make a buck. We can only wonder how much Idris Elba got paid to say “He does look like a Pokémon. Pika, pika.” Carrey said of his return:
“And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s First Reactions Are In
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sees Ben Schwartz return as the titular SEGA character, along with James Marsden as his human friend, Tom. Idris Elba also reprises his role as Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the surprisingly good Knuckles spin-off. Carrey actually plays two villains in the sequel. As well as Doctor Robotnik, Carrey plays his evil grandfather, Gerald Robotnik (does that mean he got paid double?). But, according to the first reactions, Keanu Reeves is the standout star of the threequel — which seems obvious in hindsight.

The actor is willing to step back into the iconic role as long he doesn’t have to step into the suit.
Ahead of its December 21 release date, the first reactions hail Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as the perfect end to the trilogy. Full reviews are still under embargo until December 20. But, social media is filled with first reactions from lucky critics and members of the press. “It’s not often that each movie gets better in a trilogy, but #SonicMovie3 is the best of the bunch,” wrote ComicBook’s Chris Killian. The first reactions also reveal that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has two post-credits scenes. As well as mid-credit scenes, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reportedly contains new footage right up until the final second of the film’s runtime.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the sequel to the 2022 comedy-adventure movie that featured the Blue Blur and his companions on an adventure to stop Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world. The new film sees the new antagonist Shadow the Hedgehog, arriving to cause trouble for the newly formed trio of heroes, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, as they adjust to their earthly lives.
