Slot provides his verdict as Liverpool are held to a draw by Aston Villa

Slot talks about Liverpool’s dropped points at Villa Park

Liverpool took on Aston Villa away from home on Wednesday evening in the Premier League with the fixture having been brought forward due to their participation in the Carabao Cup final next week. It was a golden chance for Arne Slot’s men to win and extend their advantage over Arsenal as league leaders, but the team was able to pick just one point at Villa Park.

If the Gunners win their game in hand, they would trail the Reds by only five points. Slot was asked about the team’s performance and whether he was satisfied by the team picking up a point rather than losing two. The Dutchman was quoted saying the following in response by the official Liverpool website.

“The last thing. The only reason why we could, could, could be happy with a 2-2 is because they got the last chance of the game, maybe their third chance after scoring two. So, that could be the only reason that we would say, ‘OK, a point is good to take.’ But for the rest, I think for everything else I am not happy with the 2-2. I wasn’t happy at all being 2-1 down at half-time – that didn’t reflect, in my opinion, the first half at all. But that’s the thing in football – if you concede a set-piece things can change quite quickly.”

The last couple of games have been far from ideal for Liverpool as they were perhaps lucky to pick up all three points at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers as well. At Villa Park, which is always a tough venue to visit, they came away with a point which could potentially drag Arsenal back into the title race subject to their results in the near future.

Nevertheless, it is good to see a manager not accept just one point. In spite of their advantage atop the standings, the Reds seem determined to end the title race as early as they possibly can, while not giving their rivals a sniff of potentially re-entering the picture too. That said, the team’s next fixture comes at home against Manchester City, who will be beleaguered from their defeat to Real Madrid.

It will be interesting to see how the Reds perform at Anfield against the defending champions and in spite of their now narrowed advantage, they would believe they have one hand on the trophy should they win.
