Sky Sports: Newcastle now in four-club battle to sign £55m Nicolas Jackson

The topic of potentially signing Nicolas Jackson is one that has divided the entire Newcastle United fanbase.

With Alexander Isak looking increasingly likely to have already kicked his final ball for the club, there’s very, very few forwards on the planet who could be a suitable replacement.

And the Chelsea forward has emerged as a serious contender to replace the Swede, as we look increasingly certain to play Anthony Gordon or Will Osula up top against Aston Villa on the opening weekend.

But Jackson could very well be just the next player who we face a tough battle to sign, with Sky Sports now revealing three European giants also in the race…

According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have now entered the race to sign Nicolas Jackson this summer.

Despite having Harry Kane already on their books, and being linked with the highly-rated Nick Woltemade, the Bavarian giants have reportedly made enquiries in the past few hours.

They aren’t the only European giant in the mix, however, as Sky Sports also report that Serie A duo AC Milan and Juventus have also contacted Chelsea to find out the ‘conditions of a deal.’

Interestingly, the fee for Jackson looks to differ depending on the report. Where The Mail said Chelsea value Jackson above the £75m and £79m that was paid for Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike, Plettenberg claims that Jackson is ‘only’ valued at around £55m.

Though this could very well be the case of Chelsea charging the likes of ourselves and Manchester United a domestic premium price, where they would be far more willing to sell abroad for cheaper so they wouldn’t be strengthening a Premier League rival in the process.

On the surface, this news probably comes as no surprise to Newcastle fans: we’ve seen big clubs swoop in on almost all of our targets this summer.

But the fact it’s Bayern Munich coming in for Jackson could be a sign that Vincent Kompany’s champions may be edging away from a move for Woltemade.

The star of the U-21 EUROs, Woltemade recorded 12 goals in the Bundesliga last season, one less than Sesko, and has already been called up to the German National Team by Julian Nagelsmann.

As far as statement signings go, signing arguably the best striker under 21-years-old in Europe right now would be the boost our window so desperately needed.

But it gets complicated: Stuttgart are reportedly less willing to sell to Bayern and are asking for €10m more than what they’re offering, but the striker has already agreed personal terms with the former European champions.

So this will be a very interesting one to see unfold, particularly if Eddie Howe pushes for the cheaper, younger option in Woltemade, or the more expensive but experienced Jackson
