The main criticism of Newcastle United’s summer recruitment strategy has been the speed in which we’ve moved and approached players.
Eddie Howe asked before the window even started for any and all business to be sorted quickly, but with just a single senior signing through the doors, it’s fair to say that the manager has been let down in that regard.
But now backed into a corner with the news that Alexander Isak is exploring his options, and Liverpool could be preparing a formal offer, it looks to have finally inspired us to take some serious action.
And according to a new report, we’re finally getting started on a highly-valued potential replacement for Isak…
Our recruitment team look to have adopted the strategy of approach the player first, then their club later, when it comes to negotiating a transfer.
We’ve done it with Yoane Wissa, which has inspired a monumental fallout between the Congolese forward and Brentford’s higher-ups.
And now according to Sky Germany’s Philipp Hinze, we have now entered negotiations with the agents of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko over a potential summer move.
It comes as numerous conflicting reports emerge over just how far along in negotiations we are with the 22-year-old and his entourage.
Transfer journalist Nicolo Schira claims that we have already agreed a five year deal in principle with the striker.
The common theme is though that we have not commenced talks with RB Leipzig, who remain adamant that they will only accept a package of around £70m for their star player.
The absolute worst thing we can do in negotiations would be to sell Alexander Isak before we even attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko.
But then we have a potentially difficult situation emerging of Sesko becoming the latest striker, like Liam Delap earlier in the window, who would only make the move to Newcastle if he was guaranteed to be the starting number nine.
We remain solid in our stance over Isak: he’s not for sale and it will take £150m to even begin negotiations: so whilst signing Sesko may soften our stance over selling Isak, thankfully, it shouldn’t impact how much we’re asking for.
