Sicario 3 Gets Bad News from Producers, Won’t Be Made Anytime Soon

Sicario 3 Gets Bad News from Producers, Won’t Be Made Anytime Soon

Sicario captured lightning in a bottle, coming out of seemingly nowhere with a perfect cast and crew. It’s arguably the best single thing that Taylor Sheridan has ever written, and it’s the film that launched Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Blade Runner 2049) as a Hollywood king. Its score from the late, great Jóhann Jóhannsson and visuals from the brilliant cinematographer Roger Deakins complement the story brilliantly. It’s the actors and their characters, though, which truly caught audiences’ attention. The core trio of Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin were pitch-perfect. We got a good sequel with Day of the Soldado in 2018, but ever since then, fans have been hoping for a Sicario 3 that actually brings the whole gang back together. It appears, however, that there’s not even a first draft of a script that’s been approved.

MovieWeb recently spoke with the lead partners of Thunder Road Films, founder Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, about the 10th anniversary of their hit, John Wick, but we had to ask about this other franchise of theirs that we love. “We’re trying to figure out what that storyline is that merits a third movie,” says Lee of Sicario. “I mean, we would love to make a third movie, and I think that the actors would like to come. I think we just have to figure out what the next chapter in that journey is.” She continues:

“We’re talking about it a lot, thinking about it and discussing it. I love those movies. Those are so close to my heart. And I think it’s an amazing franchise. You know, Denis [Villeneuve] set the bar really high, and they and all of our actors have gone on to do such amazing things and stuff, and Taylor [Sheridan] has, like, the Taylor-verse, so I think
we have to figure out what makes sense to get that band back together
. I think the hope is to get all three actors back, in a perfect world.”

Frankly, what we’re trying to figure out at this point is just to get a script that’s good enough to get everybody excited about it.

Sicario 3 Needs to Bring Back Brolin, Blunt, and Benicio

Basil Iwanyk echoes Lee’s thoughts with even more details, explaining how the cast and crew of Sicario have become so huge that it’s very difficult to get them all in the same room at the same time:

“I think, 100%, all three of those actors, if we get the script right, would love to be in another. First of all, they all love their roles, they love the movies, and they’re all really good friends. They were all friends even before we shot
Sicario,
and there’s great camaraderie among the
Sicario
family, so
there is a full intention to get them all back in a movie, to get a script that’s good enough for them
to, as you pointed out, carve out time in their very busy schedules.”

“But that is a big mandate for the company, and a big mandate for [the other production company behind Sicario] Black Label Media, is to get a script right,” continues Iwanyk. “Whether that can exist without Taylor and Denis? Obviously, Denis didn’t do the second one, Day of the Soldado, and Stefano [Sollima] did a great job. Denis is one of the great directors working in Hollywood, obviously, and Taylor Sheridan has become Taylor Sheridan, but, of course, we’d love to have them all back, but that’s assuming that’s gonna happen. And frankly, what we’re trying to figure out at this point is just to get a script that’s good enough to get everybody excited about it.

In the meantime, Lee and Iwanyk are continuing the John Wick franchise with Ballerina next year. You can catch a sneak peek of that film at the 10th anniversary screenings of John Wick, which returns to theaters for two nights only – November 3rd and 6th, 2024. Find theaters and tickets here.
