The long-awaited MCU sequel fans have waited nearly five years for is still well on its way, according to the film’s star. Simu Liu, who is set to feature as Shang-Chi in the upcoming event film Avengers: Doomsday, has revealed a promising new update on his superhero franchise.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Liu confirmed that Marvel Studios is still developing a sequel to the 2021 superhero blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He did not have a “whole lot to tease” at the moment, but reassured fans that a follow-up is being made. With his character appearing in both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, it sounds like fans will have to remain patient in the next few years for Shang-Chi 2 to come to fruition. Still, it is promising that Liu is confident that the sequel will hit the big screen some day.
“There’s not a whole lot to tease right now, other than I think, I sound like a broken record at this point, but it is happening.”
With Destin Daniel Cretton moving on to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and potentially more Spidey films, Marvel Studios now has a decision to make regarding who will direct Shang-Chi 2. Recently, Liu revealed a shortlist of directors he would handpick to helm the long-awaited sequel. In response to a fan’s query, Liu chose three potential choices to direct the film: Chloé Zhao (Eternals), The Daniels (Everything Everywhere All At Once), and Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters). It’s hard to argue against the list, especially since it includes three Oscar-nominated filmmakers whose work continues to impress.
