Seth Rogen’s ‘Gigli’ Audition as a Disabled Boy Would “End His Career”

Seth Rogen’s ‘Gigli’ Audition as a Disabled Boy Would “End His Career”

Seth Rogen is not a writer/actor known for being subtle or politically correct in many of his projects, but it seems that there is one audition he took part in that he believes would end his career if it was ever made public. What could possibly be that bad and offensive that Rogen would feel it went too far?

One highly acclaimed actor is at the top of Seth Rogen’s list for the second season of ‘The Studio.’

The audition in question was for a role in the film that should have probably ended the careers of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez back in 2003; the 6% Rotten Tomatoes-scored abomination of celluloid that was Gigli. In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Rogen recalled auditioning for the role of a “boy with a cognitive disability,” and is incredibly thankful the audition tape is not out in the digital world. He told Kimmel:

“It has been a long time, and thank god it was mostly physical VHS tapes and stuff like that that was being used when I was auditioning for things, because the things I auditioned for, in retrospect, if they were out there in the world, they would end my career very, very fast, I believe. I auditioned for this boy with a cognitive disability. And I don’t think the script was written in what, by today’s standards, would be the most sensitive portrayal of a boy with a cognitive disability. I wanted to leave an impression.

“I don’t think I wore a helmet in to the audition itself, but it was at play, and I’m tempted to do an impression of what I did, but I can’t even do it. I can’t. That’s how bad it was. It’s so bad. I dare not even portray what I did in this audition. Because I went for it. I saw myself at the Oscars. Truthfully, if that tape was out [in] the world today, this would be the last interview you ever saw me do. Other than, like, my apology tour. Please, if you have it, burn it. Please sell it to me. I will buy it.”

‘Gigli’ Was a Movie That Many Wish was Also Lost, Like Rogen’s Audition Tape

If there is a movie that comes up time and time again on “worst ever” lists, then Gigli is almost guaranteed to be somewhere near the top end of things. The story sees Affleck’s Gigli being forced to kidnap the psychologically challenged younger brother of a federal prosecutor (the role Rogen would have played), but things get complicated when his boss sends in a beautiful female gangster (Lopez) to assist the kidnapping.

The premise is not exactly new, but that is not the main problem with the film. Surprisingly, that honor fell to the strong conviction that Affleck and Lopez just had no chemistry, perhaps a sign that they should have listened to beyond the movie – twice – and the script being labelled a mess that made it one of the most forgettable movies of the decade. Although some could say this is a harsh appraisal of any film, it is worth remembering that director Martin Breast actually refuses to say the name of the movie in interviews. Now that is harsh.
