Sergino Dest and Ricardo Pepi became the first U.S. men’s national team pair to enjoy a trophy lift during the new European season.
Dest scored the winning goal for PSV on Sunday in a 2-1 comeback victory over Go Ahead Eagles in the Dutch Super Cup. The USMNT fullback played the full 90 minutes for PSV while Pepi played 28 minutes off of the bench.
Peter Bosz’s squad needed a second-half rally after Mathis Suray propelled the Eagles in front before halftime.
However, a Gerrit Nauber own goal tied the match up in the 78th minute before Dest’s powerful left-footed strike propelled PSV in front six minutes later.
It marked Dest’s first goal since the 2023-24 campaign.
PSV would hang on to capture the trophy, kicking off its domestic campaign on a winning note.
Dest only made seven appearances last season after returning from a serious knee injury. He will now likely reclaim the starting right back job following Richie Ledezma’s summer transfer to Mexican club Chivas.
Pepi, who was given the No. 9 kit this summer, tallied 17 goals for PSV in all competitions last season.
PSV will begin its Eredivisie title defense on August 9 against Sparta Rotterdam.
