Season 3 Trailer Unveils Long-Missing, Key Player

Season 3 Trailer Unveils Long-Missing, Key Player

Fire and blood will reign. The Dance of the Dragons is in full swing on HBO’s House of the Dragon, and fans have been champing at the bit for even a taste of Season 3. Thankfully, Westerosis now have a teaser trailer to tide them over until the press campaign is officially underway. With the Targaryen civil war’s most prominent players finally coming into the fold, it only makes sense that one of its all-stars gets his due in Season 3.

Admittedly, he should’ve appeared in Season 2 (at the latest). Still, the anticipation for his arrival is reaching a fever pitch, with the Season 3 trailer cementing his presence in the battles to come. Yes, it’s none other than Daeron Targaryen, the third son and youngest child of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower. In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the Targaryen history book that’s the basis for the series, Daeron is the MVP for Team Green. He’ll shape the Dance of the Dragons.

Daeron Is First Mentioned in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2

HBO

The fourth child of Viserys and Alicent is completely absent from House of the Dragon Season 1. However, the show finally acknowledges his existence in Season 2. In Season 2, Episode 2, “Rhaenyra the Cruel,” Otto Hightower decides to venture to Oldtown to mentor Daeron after King Aegon II Targaryen fires him. However, Alicent instructs her father to travel to Highgarden to ensure they have House Tyrell’s support. Daeron is brought up again in a conversation between Alicent and her brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower, in Season 2, Episode 6, “Smallfolk.” Viewers learn that Daeron is serving as a ward of Lord Hobert Hightower in Oldtown. Gwayne tells Alicent that her 16-year-old son is kind, smart, hardworking, and a skilled fighter – the antithesis of the selfishness so commonplace in House Targaryen.

Then, in the Season 2 finale, “The Queen Who Ever Was,” Tessarion, Daeron’s dragon, is seen soaring above the Hightower host, led by Lord Ormund Hightower. Dubbed “The Blue Queen,” Tessarion is one of the most beautiful dragons in the bunch (Sunfyre would be the most beautiful, but … you know).

A Certain She-Dragon Appears in the ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Trailer

Fans got a closer look at Tessarion the Blue Queen in the House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer. In the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, she walks toward the Hightower encampment near the trees. Her saddle is empty, though. The voiceover in the trailer sounds unfamiliar, and it could potentially be whoever was cast as Daeron. The Powers That Be seem keen on keeping Daeron under lock and key to continue drumming up the hype.

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS from Fire & Blood!

Daeron truly is a boon for Team Green in the Dance of the Dragons. He’s the ace up their sleeve. He saves the day during the Battle of the Honeywine, helping Ormund secure a decisive victory for the Greens. That’s what earns him his moniker, “Daeron the Daring.” Despite his young age, Team Black considers Daeron a threat to Rhaenyra Targaryen’s rule after the fall of King’s Landing. A handful of houses and even an entire region bend the knee to Aegon II to avoid facing Daeron and Tessarion. He also ensures Team Green’s triumph during the First Battle of Tumbleton.

Whereas Team Black had the advantage in Season 2 by sheer number of dragons on their side, Daeron and Tessarion provide Team Green with the edge they need to get some wins under their belt. Sunfyre is out of commission (and Aegon II is on the lam), and Helaena refuses to mount Dreamfyre, leaving only the ancient – and massive – Vhagar as the Greens’ true weapon of mass destruction.

Hey, Tessarion might look pretty, but she’s formidable on the battlefield, as is her rider. Daeron’s arrival in House of the Dragon Season 3 will change everything.
