Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Scrubs revival, Episode 3, “My Rom-Com.”Scrubs has been revived, and almost everything is exactly the same as when the show was originally on the air. Once it’s accepted that Season 9 is no longer canon, it feels like Scrubs has never been away. That said, fans have been disgruntled by one of the few changes, and it involves Zach Braff’s JD. While Braff is once more bringing his iconic sitcom character to life as authentically as ever, an off-screen development has thrown an emotional spanner in the works.
Scrubs‘ double-episode premiere acknowledged this twist but then just seemed to leave it behind. It was too important to glaze over, but that’s what appeared to be the approach. In Episode 3, “My Rom-Com,” the big change to JD’s personal life has finally been given the respect and attention that it deserves. The installment doesn’t totally resolve things, but it does set up the rest of the Scrubs revival to provide some much-sought-after answers.
JD and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) got married after Season 8. This was revealed in Season 9, and although those episodes aren’t canonically relevant anymore, the revival allowed this development to remain intact. Then, the new episodes quickly explained that a divorce had taken place at some point since “My Finale.” Despite some light objection from Elliot to JD’s presence back at Sacred Heart, the pair rapidly fell back into old routines and started interacting as if almost nothing had happened. Divorces are famously quite rough, but Scrubs didn’t seem to want to acknowledge that in any meaningful way in its first two episodes back.
“My Rom-Com” finally features an emotional exchange between JD and Elliot and proves that they’re both struggling far more than it seems on the surface. Even Elliot, who was the one who called things off, is visibly upset by finding herself working alongside and under her ex-husband and new Chief of Medicine. Although they do find some common ground and try to move forward as friends, it’s probably not going to be an easy transition for either of them. Elliot even mentions that she still sees JD as “family,” which raises questions about what could possibly have come between them between Season 8 and the revival.
JD & Elliot’s Post-Divorce Storyline Is Far From Over
As mentioned, Scrubs still hasn’t explained JD and Elliot’s unexpected divorce; it’s just been revealed that it happened. Some fans have been voicing their concerns that the split won’t be fully addressed, but I think it’s safe to say that just isn’t a possibility. Their will-they/won’t-they storyline in the sitcom’s original run was one of its defining characteristics. The fact that they ended up together in Season 8 (and the now-defunct Season 9) was treated as the emotional endgame it was always intended to be.
Therefore, the revival owes it to Scrubs fans to eventually give a more detailed account of why the marriage crashed and burned. It’s obviously intended to be one of the biggest mysteries looming large over the new episodes, and even more so after that devastating bathroom exchange in “My Rom-Com.” With Scrubs trying and succeeding to replicate the original vibe of the show, the glaring omission of a happy ending for JD and Elliot is very easy to identify as a loose end that will only eventually be accounted for in its entirety.
