On Wednesday afternoon, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Sandro Tonali was unsettled and eyeing a return to Italy.
Thankfully, a matter of hours after these claims from Gazzetta reporter Carlo Laudisa, Tonali’s agent has set the record straight by issuing a clear statement of his own in response to the rumours.
Speaking to Fabrizio Romano, Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso insists that the Newcastle midfielder is “absolutely not considering” a move back to his home country, where he left AC Milan for the Premier League back in 2023.
Riso said: “Sandro is absolutely not considering to return in Serie A”.
“He’s happy at Newcastle, happy to play in the best league in the world and he’s an idol for Newcastle fans who’ve always supported Sandro in every moment”.
Although Tonali hasn’t enjoyed the smoothest reintegration back into the senior squad, having been occasionally rotated with Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock, the Italian international’s talent and drive to succeed rival the very best currently at the club.
If Newcastle were looking to make a profit or at least break even on Tonali, it would no doubt require one of the most expensive transfer fees in Serie A history to become possible.
Both Newcastle fans and the club’s hierarchy can take heart from this immediate response from Tonali’s camp.
After a tough 12 months for the Italian, he did not need fresh questions around his future and this move from his agent shuts down any unhelpful rumours and allows the 24-year-old to focus on his football.
