Samara Weaving Battles a Stalker in ‘Borderline’ Trailer

Samara Weaving Battles a Stalker in ‘Borderline’ Trailer

Samara Weaving plays a pop star whose home is invaded by an obsessed fan in Borderline, an upcoming action-comedy thriller being described as a “violently romantic comedy.” Judging from the film’s first trailer, this is certainly a spin on the traditional rom-com for fans looking for something a bit more offbeat. Check out the trailer below.

Written and directed by Jimmy Warden, who scripted 2023’s comedy horror film Cocaine Bear, Borderline stars Weaving as Sofia, a pop star who sees her home invaded by an obsessed fan named Paul (Ray Nicholson). The fan is convinced that the pair are meant to not only be together but also be married, and he plans to manipulate Sofia into succumbing to his delusions. The film also stars Eric Dane, Alba Baptista and Jimmie Fails.

Warden marks his directorial debut with Borderline, and it does look like a fun, albeit demented, piece of work. The trailer is surprisingly tense, although it does clearly indicate that a lot of this will be played for comedy. It’s almost played like a modern comedy remake of Rob Reiner’s Misery, which led to an Academy Award win for its star, Kathy Bates. That likely won’t happen here, but it does continue a nice trend of roles for Weaving, who has become a go-to actress for genre roles such as Ready or Not and The Babysitter. You can check out more of the film’s synopsis below.

“Paul is desperate to prove his dedication but Sofia’s just trying to survive the night. As Paul grows more unhinged, his fantasy becomes more dangerous. With help from her loyal bodyguard (Eric Dane), Sofia must fight not only for her life, but for her sanity, and escape the sinister grip of her stalker and his growing group of accomplices.”

Borderline Has a Margot Robbie Connection

Borderline is connected to Margot Robbie because it was produced by her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, the same company that produced Barbie and Saltburn. The screenplay was featured on The Black List in 2020, a survey of the most-liked unproduced screenplays, indicating that it showed some promise. Shooting began in September 2022 in Vancouver, Canada, and wrapped post-production in February 2023. The movie was presented at market screenings at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival, and its release will be handled by Magnet Releasing.

Ready or Not 2 Confirmed With Samara Weaving Returning for Horror Sequel

A Ready or Not sequel is officially confirmed, following months of speculation.

Warden has already been responsible for a surprise hit with Cocaine Bear, a movie very loosely inspired by the true story of an American black bear that consumed several kilograms of discarded cocaine. The movie’s out-there premise impressed critics and, with the help of Elizabeth Banks’ direction, tripled its budget at the box office. Samara Weaving’s most recently released film was the quasi-experimental survival thriller, Azrael.

Borderline is scheduled to be released on March 14.
