As the first adaptation of an Andy Weir novel since Ridley Scott’s fantastic Matt Damon movie, The Martian, next year’s epic space-centric movie starring Ryan Gosling has quite a reputation to live up to. Entitled Project Hail Mary, the film sees Gosling playing a teacher who finds himself becoming the only man who can save the Earth from disaster when it is discovered that the sun is dying. While audiences will have to wait until March 2026 to see the film, Weir has already seen a cut of the movie and could not hold back when revealing his thoughts on it.

This one could end up being a cult favorite.
The weekend’s SDCC event saw Project Hail Mary being one of the many movies to host a panel discussion, and, as per Screen Rant, Weir was on hand to let everyone know just how excited they should get for the movie. It turns out they should be very excited indeed.
“I’ve seen cuts of the film, and it’s really good, guys. It’s really good. These guys, they’re amazing directors, everybody knows that. I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out. I couldn’t ask for better talent in every aspect… we waited for Drew [Goddard, the screenwriter]… We had to wait several months for him to finish [the project he was working on.]”
‘Project Hail Mary’ Is Almost Guaranteed to Be a Hit for Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling has been one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood for several years now. With critical hits such as Blade Runner 2049, Barbie, and last year’s The Fall Guy under his belt, Project Hail Mary is almost certain to bring Gosling more success. The official synopsis of the movie reads:
“Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”
The first trailer for Project Hail Mary recently revealed a tease about what to expect from the film, and Gosling’s charm and gentle humor shine through in his role as Grace, a man completely out of his comfort zone – like, “out of this world” out his comfort zone. That was also something true of directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord, who spoke at SDCC of the challenges the movie’s space setting created.
“What’s great about this movie is there are so many things that make it harder to make. All of the zero G, all of the centrifugal gravity, the characters have to have a wall between them because their atmospheres are different. Everything that a regular movie would be like, ‘Oh, we can change that,’ we were like, ‘Anything that makes it harder we’re not going to change.’ We’re going to stay true to it, and then that difficulty is what makes it interesting and makes it special.”
Co-director Lord added, “We kept saying, with respect, this movie is not a Mac, it’s a PC. The movie is a machine, the ship is a machine; it can be beautiful, it just can’t be pretty.”
