Russo Brothers Share Doctor Doom Art to Celebrate Robert Downey Jr’s Birthday

Russo Brothers Share Doctor Doom Art to Celebrate Robert Downey Jr’s Birthday

The Russo Brothers have a very busy schedule ahead of them. Now that their latest film, The Electric State, has finally hit Netflix and promotion for the movie has ended, their next big undertaking is set to begin filming soon. As it turns out, the Russo Brothers couldn’t stay away from Marvel Studios, as the creative duo have reunited with studio head and executive producer Kevin Feige for the conclusion to the Multiverse Saga— Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Robert Downey Jr. is leading the charge in their massive cast, as he was revealed to be playing Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic Con last year. This past week was the actor’s birthday, and the Russos celebrated in a very interesting way.

The directors took to their Instagram account to share their birthday wishes for Downey, who turned 60 this year. To celebrate the occasion, the post featured some impressive art from BossLogic of the character Doctor Doom, depicting the villain eating an Iron Man birthday cake. The Russos would add the amusing caption “Happy Doomsday to all who celebrate… AKA the incredible Robert Downey Jr.’s birthday.”

Ms. Marvel’s MCU Future Given Hopeful Update Following Absence from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ executive producer Sana Amanat hints at Ms. Marvel’s return, but will she have a role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday?’

As with most BossLogic fan art, there are plenty of Easter eggs and details to pick up on in the fan art. Besides the Iron Man cake, the chair Doom is sitting in also has Thanos’ helmet resting on the corner of it, as if to allude that this new villain poses a more significant threat than the one at the end of The Infinity Saga. Overall, it’s a fitting tribute to a phenomenal actor with a tall task ahead of him.

Robert Downey Jr. Has Big Shoes to Fill – His Own

Robert Downey Jr. and some other original Avengers cast members, such as Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, went out on incredibly high notes in Avengers: Endgame, making Downey’s return feel much riskier. Russo’s positioning of the actor who played one of the most iconic heroes as the big villain in the next two Avengers movies is undoubtedly a big risk. However, it could also be a good strategy, especially considering the actor’s recent success in projects like Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Park Chan-wook’s The Sympathizer.

Following his brief sabbatical from the MCU, Downey has shown impressive range as an actor. Nothing is more evident of that than his Best Supporting Actor win at the 2024 Academy Awards for his role as Lewis Strauss, a character who served as a narrative throughline in Oppenheimer’s black and white sequences. Downey’s performance as a ruthless government official could give fans an idea of what the actor is capable of in a role more antagonistic than that of Iron Man.

Downey’s celebration of a milestone birthday coinciding with the start of filming on Avengers: Doomsday feels like a good omen for the film. Although the Russo brothers have failed to garner a positive critical response from their recent films, a return to the MCU and the addition of Downey’s acting prowess may be what they need to correct course and create a truly remarkable end to the Multiverse Saga.
