“Ruh-roh!” Netflix’s ‘Scooby-Doo’ Live-Action Series Reportedly Reveals New Title & Synopsis

A potential title and plot synopsis for Netflix’s live-action Scooby-Doo series has seemingly been revealed. Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears and debuted in 1969, introducing the world to Mystery Inc., a group of four teenagers and the titular Great Dane. For over fifty years, Scooby-Doo and the rest of Mystery Inc. have appeared in multiple television series and two theatrically released live-action feature films, as well as multiple direct-to-video live-action movies. Now, Scooby-Doo is set to make the leap to live-action series on Netflix.

According to Production Weekly, the title will simply be Scooby-Doo, and will be a reimagining of the team’s origins. Notably, Shaggy and Daphne will already be friends from summer camp and Fred will be a mysterious new kid in town. Velma, meanwhile, is described as the town’s scientific member whom the group recruits. The central mystery kicks off when Shaggy and Daphne find Scooby after the dog witnessed a supernatural murder. Here is the reported summary reads:

“An origin story of how the Mystery Inc. group got together and first teamed up to crack the haunting case that started it all. During their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.

Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

‘Scooby-Doo’ Begins Again at Netflix

Reports of Netflix doing a live-action Scooby-Doo series first emerged in 2024, but nothing was officially announced until 2025. The series will be produced by Berlanti Productions and will be a more mature, darker take on Scooby-Doo, similar to what Riverdale did for the Archie comics. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are writing the series, with filming expected to begin in 2026. Casting is currently underway.

Doing a take on Mystery Inc’s origin is nothing new for the franchise. One of the most successful spin-offs is the animated series, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, which saw the Mystery Inc. gang as young kids. Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed featured flashbacks to how the team formed, with the 2009 television movie Scooby Doo: The Mystery Begins showing Mystery Inc. meeting in high school. In 2018, Daphne & Velma showed an alternate prequel for how the two title characters met. 2020’s Scoob! featured an opening prologue that showed how Shaggy adopted Scooby-Doo and met Fred, Daphne, and Velma.

Scooby-Doo will be another attempt at a darker, more mature take on the material. In 2016, DC Comics published Scooby Apocalypse, a 37-issue series that imagined the iconic characters in a post-apocalyptic scenario. In 2018, Scooby-Doo crossed over with Supernatural, showing how the animated characters would interact when the violent world of Sam and Dean Winchester infects their animated world. From 2023 to 2024, HBO aired Velma, an adult-oriented take on the Scooby-Doo franchise (minus Scooby) with Mindy Kailing voicing the title character. That series was hated by fans and critics alike, so hopes are high that the next Scooby-Doo television series will be a return to form.
