Ridley Scott’s Long-Awaited Action Epic Becomes a Major Streaming Success

One of the most popular action blockbusters of this decade, which made a major splash at the box office upon its release in 2024, is finding continued success on streaming. When you think of great historical action movies, there are WWII films like Saving Private Ryan, samurai epics like Yojimbo, and even the mighty Ben-hur. But they don’t get more epic than Gladiator. Well, a few years ago, Ridley Scott said “hold my beer” (although he seems like more of a port drinker) and made Gladiator again… and he made it even bigger. Unsurprisingly, that film was titled Gladiator II, and it’s a hit on streaming.

Gladiator II is streaming on Paramount+, and the film is a global streaming sensation. Gladiator II is currently the ninth most popular movie on the platform globally. Released in 2024, Gladiator II starred Paul Mescal as Lucius, the illegitimate child of Maximus (Russel Crowe in Gladiator). After fleeing Rome following Maximus’ death, Lucius is captured by the Roman Empire and taken as a slave to the Colosseum. There, he channels his rage against the Roman Empire in bloody gladiatorial combat, all while being manipulated by the conniving politician Macrinus (Denzel Washington). The film also starred Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and Peter Mensah (pictured above). The official synopsis reads:

“Years after witnessing the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius must enter the Colosseum after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home. With rage in his heart and the future of the empire at stake, he looks to the past to find the strength and honor needed to return the glory of Rome to its people.”

Gladiator II certainly wasn’t as well-received as the first movie. But it’s still a fan favorite Ridley Scott film. It earned a modest 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while boasting a far stronger audience score of 81%. It also managed to rake in $462 million at the worldwide box office.

Russel Crowe Has a Major Problem With ‘Gladiator II’

When a legacy sequel is announced, there will always be die-hard fans of the original who will never accept the new iteration. It turns out, one of those people is Russel Crowe. The Australian actor wasn’t as prejudiced against the sequel as some fans. But when he saw the final film, he wasted no time letting his frustrations and issues be known.

“I think the recent sequel that, you know, we don’t have to name out loud, is a really unfortunate example of even the people in that engine room not actually understanding what made the first one special,” the actor said late last year. It turns out, when they were making the original, some executives didn’t understand what made it special either. “The amount of times they suggested sex scenes and stuff like that for Maximus. It’s like you’re taking away his power. So you’re saying at the same time he had this relationship with his wife, he was f*cking this other girl? What are you talking about? It’s crazy.”
