Ridley Scott is not averse to making a dystopian sci-fi movie or two, but it seems there was one big action sci-fi franchise that he is “proud” to have turned down the chance to direct. Ironically, it would be the one created by the man who took Scott’s 1979 movie Alien and pumped out an adrenaline-fueled sequel that became one of the greatest sequels of all time. Of course, we are talking about the Terminator here.
While being interviewed by The Guardian, Scott was in his usual blunt fettle when he answered a question submitted by a reader asking if he was really considered to direct Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Scott replied:
“I’m proud about this. I turned down a $20m fee. See, I can’t be bought, dude. Someone said: “Ask what Arnie gets.” I thought: “I’ll try it out.” I said: “I want what Arnie gets.” When they said yes, I thought: “Fuck me.” But I couldn’t do it. It’s not my thing. Terminator is pure comic strip. I would try to make it real.”
Scott may not be in the market for a Terminator movie, but when answering another question he did reopen the door slightly on a possible return to his own sci-fi franchise, noting that he would do another Alien prequel “if I get an idea, for sure.”
Ridley Scott Is 87 and Has No Intention of Slowing Down
While you would think anyone approaching 90 years old would be happy to kick back and take things easy, Scott, like many others of his generation, is not one of them. In the last few years he has delivered the historical epics Napoleon and Gladiator II, as well as consulting on both Alien: Romulus and Alien: Earth, and has producer credits on several other projects, including the Apple TV series, Dope Thief. As well as noting that he would certainly make another Alien movie if he gets the right idea, he is also charging ahead with Gladiator III.
Even before his belated Gladiator sequel hit cinemas, Scott was discussing his plans for a third movie. The success of Gladiator II, which is still a dominant force in streaming months after its original release, should mean that what Scott wants, Scott gets. Of course, another Gladiator movie would be a massive undertaking, but it seems there is no thought in the director’s head that he is going to stop directing any time soon.
Whatever happens with Gladiator III, it is just one of several new projects Scott is lining up, the tally of which currently includes around 20 producer credits and five movies as director – and that is not including his possible third Gladiator movie. And just in case all that doesn’t sound like enough to keep him going, he has also collaborated with Johnny Depp on a graphic novel series, Hyde, which will be launched on Halloween. Can’t the guy just put his feet up for a few months and enjoy the sun?
