‘Return to Silent Hill’ Director Received Death Threats From Game Fans

Return to Silent Hill director Christophe Gans has opened up about the intense scrutiny behind making video game adaptations, admitting that he received death threats before taking on the horror sequel. He said he knew from the outset that returning to helm a Silent Hill installment, 20 years after his original entry, would be a high-stakes challenge, but it was his aim to craft a film that would attract new audiences while still satisfying the old guard. He acknowledged that there was a pressure to please the “passionate” fanbase, especially after the first film, which is when he first encountered the weight of that responsibility.

“It was a big challenge to adapt correctly and respectfully a game which is considered a classic,” Gans told Variety in a recent interview about Return to Silent Hill, which is the third film in the iconic horror franchise. “We know that the people who love video games are very passionate. I remember when I did the first film, I received plenty of death threats. People were saying, ‘If you mess up this one, we are going to find you.’ So, I came onto the first film with great responsibility, and certainly even more with the second one. At the same time, it was important for me to imagine a movie that people who are not playing games can be interested in.”

Gans’ first attempt at a Silent Hill adaptation was a disappointment both critically and commercially when it opened in theaters in 2006. With an estimated budget of $50 million, the film fell short of making that back at the North American box office, though it experienced moderate success internationally, which brought its global earnings to just over $100 million. Its ticket sales may have been hindered by the negative reviews it received, as many critics dismissed it as a flawed video game adaptation. However, the director noted that, with the passing of time, the film’s reputation has grown, and it has proven to have enduring appeal:

“I was very pleased to see how the reputation of the movie has grown. I did an international press junket, and all the journalists were opening their interview by saying, ‘I saw the film when I was 13 or 14, and I loved it.’ It’s great, because suddenly I’m facing the 2.0 generation of Silent Hill lovers. It’s a very good feeling, because we know that you have some great films that disappear from memory in six months. The test of time is the ultimate test, when suddenly you face people who are talking about your work with a lot of enthusiasm.”
