Resurrection Season 2 Is Finally Bringing Back Iconic OG Franchise Tradition Abandoned 5 Years Ago

Dexter: Resurrection season 2 is plotting to bring back an iconic franchise tradition.

The return of Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan drew record ratings for Showtime, becoming the channel’s most-streamed premiere ever. It easily surpassed the numbers of the prequel Dexter: Original Sin, rising by 44%, and came in 76% ahead of Dexter: New Blood with 3.1 million global multi-platform viewers in just the first three days. The fan interest led to a quick renewal for Dexter: Resurrection season 2.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan on the Saturn Awards red carpet, Hall talked about wanting to bring back the franchise’s original title sequence for Dexter: Resurrection season 2. Hall, who is also an executive producer on the show, shared that the team has to figure out a way to do it because of budget-tightening, but he sounds optimistic that a solution will be reached. We’ve been talking about that. I haven’t talked to the production yet about this, but we want to replicate the original title sequence, but we’ve gotta figure out how to do it, because budgets are tight, and time is tight. But we’ll figure it out, we always do.

The title sequence in Dexter shows the main character going about his morning routine to the tune of playful and somewhat mysterious music. Things like preparing breakfast, flossing, and putting on a shirt come across as a little more menacing and bloody because it involves Dexter. But then the camera pans out to reveal that it is entirely innocuous.

The title sequence was dreamed up by Digital Kitchen, a creative studio, with Eric Anderson as the Creative Director. It was edited by Anderson and Josh Bodnar, with the music done by Daniel Licht. It won an Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Main Title Design, and a version of it was recreated for the one-season prequel Dexter: Original Sin. However, Dexter: New Blood favored a quick montage approach rather than the morning routine.

Dexter: Resurrection season 2 does not have a release date yet.

The original was so well-recognized that The Simpsons parodied it, showing Ned Flanders’ going about his routine, which could also be viewed as ominous. It speaks to how important title sequences, opening credits, and theme music still are for a television show’s long-lasting pop culture legacy. It helped set the tone for shows like Friends, Gilmore Girls, and even Succession, relatively recently.

Streaming has largely done away with inventine opening credits, instead inviting audiences to skip. But if Morgan’s routine could somehow make its way to season 2, at Hall’s urging, then it will be a step in the right direction. Maybe Morgan’s son, Harrison, and other Dexter: Resurrection characters can get in on the action.
