Every box office bomb of 2024 must be looking at Jason Statham and wondering what they have to do to steal some of his secret sauce. As well as his new hit The Beekeeper at the beginning of 2024, one of his older movies just refuses to lay down and die on Tubi. That movie is Mechanic: Resurrection, the panned 2016 action thriller sequel to 2011’s The Mechanic, which has refused to stay out of the free streamer’s list of most-watched movies.
In Mechanic: Resurrection, Statham reprises his role as Arthur Bishop, a master assassin coerced out of retirement to carry out more increasingly impossible hits. The movie delivers a masterclass from the Statham Bible, with intense and over-the-top action sequences, joined by a generally simple plot, and a big helping of the charismatic charm of the dome-headed tough guy. Although the movie performed terribly with critics, and not much better with audiences, there is clearly something about this “dud” that really speaks to the world of free streaming.
Mechanic: Resurrection is not the only film of Statham’s to recently see success on free streaming. Parker, The One, Wrath of Man, and more have all turned up in free streaming Top 10 lists, while other movies such as The Meg, Hobbs & Shaw, and, of course, The Beekeeper, have frequented similar lists on paid platforms. For reasons unknown, Jason Statham can deliver an almost guaranteed streaming hit, regardless of what anyone actually thinks about the movie itself.
Jason Statham’s Rise to Action Movie Royalty
Jason Statham’s journey began in the most unlikely of places for a Hollywood action star. Long before his first foray into the world of movies, Statham was a member of Britain’s National Diving Squad for over a decade, competing in events like the 1990 Commonwealth Games. After a stint as a male model, Statham was given a ticket to the big time in 1998 when he made his film debut in Guy Ritchie’s gangster classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Following this with roles in Snatch, the Transporter franchise, and Crank all contributed to the actor carving himself a niche as a man who could bring action just like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Van Damme did in the ‘80s.

8 Things You’ll Find in Just About Every Jason Statham Movie
Jason Statham is known for a really specific type of movie, and fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
Statham’s appeal seems to reach a peak when he is playing characters who don’t like to stick to the rules, and often have their own moral code to stick to rather than the constrictive boundaries of the law. If Statham appears in a movie poster without a gun in his hand, then something had gone badly wrong. As well as his headlining roles, Statham has also been part of some huge franchises, most notably The Expendables and the Fast & Furious series.
For those that haven’t yet checked out Mechanic: Resurrection – can there really be anyone out there left who has not? – then it is available now on Tubi for your viewing pleasure. Even if you have seen it, why not watch it again? Everyone else seems to be, as for a movie that did minimal business when it was released almost a decade ago, like so many of Statham’s characters, it really just will not die.
