Resurrection Is Giving Dexter His Worst Nightmare Connected To 19-Year-Old Running Gag

Resurrection Is Giving Dexter His Worst Nightmare Connected To 19-Year-Old Running Gag

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Resurrection episode 4.

Dexter Morgan has one of his worst nightmares come to life in Dexter: Resurrection episode 4, “Call Me Red.” The fourth episode of the second Dexter sequel series places Dexter in the midst of a secret serial killer society, held by Peter Dinklage’s murder fanatic, Leon Prater.

Throughout the OG Dexter series, which ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013, Dexter’s most endearing and relatable qualities were his love for food, particularly meat. His signature lunch order was typically a Cuban sandwich, but, similar to his appetite for killing, his appetite for food was equally insatiable.

Fast-forward to 2025, and Dexter is still the meat-loving serial killer that inspired the name The Bay Harbor Butcher in the original series. This is why Dexter’s inability to eat the delicious main courses at Prater’s dinner party is even more hilarious as he impersonates the “Dark Passenger” NYC serial killer, Ronald “Red” Schmidt.

He Was Miserable Eating Vegetables At Prater’s Party While The Other Killers Feasted

Dexter’s love for food has been very apparent throughout the entire series, which has spanned nearly two decades at this point. The original main title sequence famously featured Dexter eating ham and eggs for breakfast, and all Dexter fans are familiar with the protagonist’s enormous bites and rapid rate of ingestion.

Because Red was a vegan before Dexter killed him, and Dexter is impersonating Red at Prater’s dinner party, he is forced to eat vegetables as his entrée.

Throughout the entire original show and even the prequel, it’s been a running gag that Dexter loves food, which results in him eating so much stuff that’s terrible for him. However, in Resurrection episode 4, Dexter is teased by great big plates of food that he would normally go to town on, only for them to be taken away in favor of vegan substitutes.

Dexter: Resurrection episode 4 features the moment we’ve all been waiting for as Dexter attends the serial killer dinner party hosted by Leon Prater.

This joke works particularly well for longtime fans of Dexter, who understand how much of a food lover Dexter is. Because Red was a vegan before Dexter killed him, and Dexter is impersonating Red at Prater’s dinner party, he is forced to eat vegetables as his entrée. This makes him absolutely miserable as the other killers at the table feast around him, as well as when he’s forced to eat a kale croissant at Mia’s apartment.

Dexter’s ticket into Prater’s club is being Red, not the Bay Harbor Butcher. Although Prater would likely be even more excited and honored to have Dexter as a guest, he has to keep his cover-up as Red to avoid the other killers learning the truth about his code, which would make them all targets.

Dexter’s new sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, is wrong about Dexter’s history of personal attachments, dating back to the very first OG season.

Red and Neil Patrick Harris’s Lowell, aka the Tattoo Collector, are out of the picture, but if one of the other killers spots him eating meat or something with dairy, it might completely blow his cover. This would ultimately reveal to the other killers or Prater that he’s not actually Red, in which case Uma Thurman’s Charley would likely be given a new assignment to take the imposter out in Dexter: Resurrection.
