Despite originating in 1932 with the Boris Karloff-led The Mummy, the franchise is best associated with the action-adventure horror series that began in 1999, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The Mummy, directed by Stephen Sommers, was a box office smash and relaunched the Universal Monsters for a new era. Spanning three original films and a Scorpion King spin-off series, The Mummy holds a special place in the heart of a generation. We felt its influence on the action-adventure genre for years in films like Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney’s Jungle Cruise.
After years of high hopes that Fraser and Weisz would reprise their roles of Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, Universal Pictures has finally announced a long-awaited legacy sequel. The untitled fourth Mummy film, which we will call The Mummy 4 for simplicity’s sake, has landed a future summer release date and a pair of directors familiar with relaunching a 90s horror series, and will see the return of the Academy Award-winning duo of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. So, let’s talk about everything we know about the upcoming movie.
Confirmation of ‘The Mummy 4’
Plans for The Mummy 4 date back to 2008, before the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. However, following the third movie’s poor box office performance and negative audience reaction, and the emergence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Mummy 4 was canceled in 2012 in favor of a reboot. That reboot would eventually become Tom Cruise’s The Mummy and the first (and only) installment in Universal’s Dark Universe. After 2017’s The Mummy flopped at the box office, rumors of The Mummy 4 circulated, particularly following Brendan Fraser’s Academy Award win for Best Actor for his performance in The Whale in 2022.
The Mummy 4 was officially confirmed on Nov. 4, 2025. News also came out that directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, best known for directing 2022’s Scream and the sequel Scream VI, as well as Ready or Not and Abigail, would direct the fourth untitled Mummy movie. David Coggeshall, who previously wrote Orphan: First Kill and the upcoming Matchbox film, will pen the screenplay for The Mummy 4. The report confirmed that The Mummy 4 would be a sequel to the 1999 remake.
‘The Mummy 4’ Release Date
The Mummy 4 is set to open in theaters on May 19, 2028. The movie will come out 96 years after the original Boris Karloff The Mummy, 29 years after Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz The Mummy, and 20 years after the last film in this saga, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It will also arrive 11 years after Universal Pictures’ last attempt to revive The Mummy franchise with the Tom Cruise-starring entry in the failed Dark Universe.

‘The Mummy 4’ Cast
Both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell in The Mummy 4. Both starred in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. While Fraser returned for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Weisz did not, and Maria Bello stepped into the role of Evelyn O’Connell. So far, Fraser and Weisz are the only two actors confirmed to return.
Oded Fehr, who played Ardeth Bay in both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, has expressed interest in returning. John Hannah, who played Jonathan Carnahan in The Mummy trilogy, has also expressed interest in returning for The Mummy 4. It’s also unknown how The Mummy 4 will incorporate Rick and Evelyn’s son Alex O’Connell, played by Freddie Boath in The Mummy Returns, and Luke Ford, who played an adult version of the character in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It’s unclear if either actor will return, the part will be recast, or the character will be written out of the film. There is also no word on whether Arnold Vooslo, who played the villain Imhotep in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, will return for the fourth film. The character was not included in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Plot Details of ‘The Mummy 4’
Currently, no plot details are known for The Mummy 4, except that the movie will feature the return of Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. While plot details are being kept under wraps, director Tyler Gillett told Empire Magazine that:
“Having stepped into Scream, our radar for jumping into another franchise is that it has to feel special and [David Coggeshall’s] script really does that. It is very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun.”
Even though the summer 2028 release date is a long way away, more details about the plot and cast for The Mummy 4 will likely emerge as filming could begin in late 2026 or early 2027, though no specific filming start date has been confirmed.
