Red card against Real Madrid could be a blessing in disguise for Barcelona midfielder

Pedri was one of the victims of the late chaos that erupted during the season’s first El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The young midfielder, who has been an ever-present in figure in Hansi Flick’s midfield unit, was shown a red card and will, therefore, miss the next game against Elche.

The red card, although disappointing for Pedri, could serve as a blessing in disguise for the Spanish international.

A much-needed breather for Pedri

As reported by Diario AS, Pedri has been one of Barcelona’s most used players this season, featuring in 17 official matches and clocking up over 1,400 minutes – around 91% of the club’s total game time so far.

Constantly tasked with linking defence and attack, Pedri has been carrying the weight of a side that has at times lacked rhythm and cohesion, which has led to visible signs of fatigue and frustration in recent weeks.

Against Real Madrid, the midfielder caught Vinicius Junior during a counterattack in the first half, before being sent off in stoppage time after a collision with Aurelien Tchouameni.

It was a challenge that could easily have gone the other way. Referee Soto Grado didn’t spot the potential foul, leaving Pedri to walk off dejectedly.

Yet, his suspension could offer him the rest he desperately needs. With a clean week and no midweek fixtures, Pedri is expected to undergo a tailored training plan designed to help him recover physically and mentally ahead of the fixtures that follow.

Flick, meanwhile, will need to find a temporary midfield solution for Elche, with youngster Dro emerging as a potential option. But a rejuvenated Pedri could return sharper than ever for the challenges ahead.
