Sorry for the cringe pun, but: this sounds absolutely dino-mite, does it not? The co-writer of Jurassic Park is back for the latest installment — Jurassic World Rebirth — and he’s teasing some very exciting details about the new film. Teaming up with director Gareth Edwards, writer David Koepp says that even though the next installment of the Steven Spielberg classic has “a new tone,” it will also evoke the “spirit of the first movie.” Which will no doubt be a very exciting prospect for fans of the Michael Crichton novels-turned-blockbuster movies.
In a new interview with TheWrap, Koepp provided some exciting updates and details about the forthcoming sequel, which has already gotten tongues wagging thanks to the intriguing new photos recently released in an Entertainment Weekly summer movie preview.
When asked about what drew him to return to the universe after several films away, Koepp explained that it was “the idea of starting afresh. You don’t often get that chance, where they give you very few guidelines, except there must be dinosaurs in it.”
What Do We Know About Jurassic World Rebirth So Far?
Speaking to the importance of the Jurassic Park experience in his own career trajectory and life, Koepp had this to say:
“Writing those first two movies were some of my favorite experiences in my career so far. The combination of grand adventure and real science is right up my alley. And it was fun to be able to decide on a new tone, because every three movies seems like a good time to change tone and characters in a franchise. It was great to be able to work solely with Steven and make up a story and think of all new characters and all in a different tone.”
It’s a thrilling and nostalgic prospect, isn’t it? An openly and marked shift from the past three films’ tone, coupled with a return to the simplicity of “grand adventure and real science”? Sign us UP, folks!
Continuing to excite any and all dino-fans out there, Koepp explained that he came up with a bunch of Jurassic Park-centric “Nine Commandments,” which is based on a concept Chuck Jones used for his iconic Road Runner shorts (according to Koepp, his favorite of those rules? “coyote’s worst enemy is always gravity”).
‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Director Explains What Has Gone Wrong With the Franchise
According to Gareth Edwards, ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ will remember where the franchise began and avoid the pitfalls of several sequels.
Speaking to his own rules for the Rebirth of the Jurassic World, “Number one was – the events of the previous six movies cannot be denied or contradicted, because I hate a retcon,” Koepp explained. He also stated that the second rule was that “all science must be real.”
Perhaps the most important rule — at least in this writer’s estimation — was commandment number three: “humor is oxygen.” He went on to add that “I thought, ‘Okay, if we can stick to those,'” commandments, they’d likely attain their goal: to achieve the “spirit of the first movie, which is the tone that we would like to get closest to.”
Koepp also mentioned how “weird and trippy” it was for him “to step back in time 30 years, with the jungle and the people in the adventure gear” on the soundstages for the new film (which were located in London). He remarked that “it even smelled the same,” which just bodes well for the movie’s future, at least in our extremely unscientific and limited estimation. Because, think about it: if a movie set can evoke the smell of the original, who are we to argue against it being a return to form for the beloved franchise?
Whatever the science is there (there isn’t any), we’re more excited than ever for Jurassic World: Rebirth.
