Reacher star Alan Ritchson has already proven himself to be an action icon thanks to his role in the smash-hit Prime Video series, with the actor set to stretch both his dramatic and action muscles to tell a true war story. Counting Hollywood legend and Rambo star Sylvester Stallone among its producers, the project is now in production courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios, with filming now set to begin very soon.
While the action war movie does not yet have a title, it has now been revealed that Ritchson will take the lead in the project, portraying decorated Navy SEAL hero Mike Thornton, who received the Medal of Honor after rescuing a wounded teammate while under intense enemy fire during the Vietnam War.
Filming is due to begin later this month, according to Screen Queensland, with Ritchson returning to Queensland, Australia to make the movie following the completion of another action thriller, the upcoming Runner. Directed by Australian filmmaker Patrick Hughes (Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), the war movie stars Alan Ritchson (Reacher, Fast X) alongside Joe Cole (Subversion, A Prayer Before Dawn) and Hoa Xuande (The Sympathizer, Avatar: The Last Airbender). A newly revealed logline has also now been released, which you can check out below…
“The untitled feature depicts the incredible real-life struggle for survival in the hostile waters of the South China Sea that earned Mike Thornton a Congressional Medal of Honor.”
Alan Ritchson Has a Whole Lot of Action Thrills on the Horizon
The war movie marks another major action project for Alan Ritchson, who continues to climb the Hollywood A-list following his powerful (in every sense of the word) portrayal of the nomadic avenger, Jack Reacher. Depicting a harrowing, extraordinary true story of soldiers trapped behind enemy lines and making a desperate last stand, the untitled movie contains all the beloved tropes that could result in a war movie classic.
The as-yet-untitled project marks the second action thriller from Alan Ritchson and director Patrick Hughes. The pair will first join forces for the sci-fi action outing War Machine, which is now all set to debut on Netflix on March 6, 2026. Featuring an all-star cast alongside Ritchson that includes Dennis Quaid, Jai Courtney, Stephan James, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber, War Machine is set “During the final stage of U.S. Army Ranger selection, an elite team’s training exercise turns into a fight for survival against an unimaginable threat,” according to the official logline.
Alongside both the untitled Vietnam War movie and War Machine, Alan Ritchson is also due to reprise the role of Jack Reacher in a fourth season and the Frances Neagley spin-off, both of which are expected to premiere in 2026. Not only that, sometime this year, Ritchson will also lead the ’70s-set action thriller Motor City from director Potsy Ponciroli, which follows the actor as a silent ex-con out for revenge after being framed for a crime he didn’t commit.
