PSG ‘need to think’ about second leg vs Arsenal… with striker facing medical test on Wednesday

PSG ‘need to think’ about second leg vs Arsenal… with striker facing medical test on Wednesday

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique says first-leg matchwinner Ousmane Dembele is a doubt for his side’s return match against Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals because of injury.

Dembele struck the only goal of the game at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday but was replaced by Bradley Barcola 20 minutes from time with a reported hamstring problem and will be assessed on Wednesday.

“I can’t say anything because I don’t really know,” Luis Enrique conceded.

“Tomorrow we’ll have the medical test we need and then we’ll be able to give an update on how he’s doing, but it’s nothing serious. It’s just a niggle, but we need to think about the second leg.”

Ousmane Dembele injury

France forward Dembele described the issue as “fine” when he boarded the team bus after scoring his eighth goal of PSG’s European campaign, according to Fabrice Hawkins.

The reporter quoted Luis Enrique to have called the injury “rather minor” but added that there is “some doubt” over the 27-year-old’s involvement at the Parc des Princes on May 7 (20:00 BST).

Dembele’s potential absence could be good news for Arsenal, although PSG have numerous attacking options in reserve, including Barcola, who sent a late finish wide after breaking through on goal, and Goncalo Ramos, who thumped a shot against the crossbar.

PSG vs Arsenal

PSG have never won the Champions League but are in a strong position to add to their one appearance in the final, when they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in 2019/20.

Luis Enrique won the competition as Barcelona manager in 2014/15, also lifting the Liga and Copa del Rey trophies that season.

The 54-year-old has already guided his squad to the 2024/25 Ligue 1 title, although they suffered the first defeat of their top-flight campaign at home to Nice on Friday.

Paris have not been invincible at home in their campaign, losing by a goal to Atletico Madrid during the league phase and Liverpool in the last 16, but their impressive away display has put them in a commanding position against Arsenal.

The winners of the tie will advance to a final against Barcelona or Inter, who play the first leg of their semi-final in Spain on Wednesday (20:00 BST).
