This masterpiece sci-fi series with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score is streaming now exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Fans of sci-fi series and Prime Video viewers looking to make the most out of their subscriptions should absolutely check out this fantastic series that was canceled not once, but twice.
This series originally aired on the Syfy cable channel and premiered back in November 2015. After being canceled by Syfy after three seasons, Prime Video picked up the series and produced three more installments. The series ended after six seasons, which is quite good for any modern streaming series, but that didn’t stop fans from demanding more.
The Expanse Is One Of The 21st Century’s Best Sci-Fi Shows
Prime Video was right for bringing The Expanse back from the cancellation graveyard, as some of its greatest seasons were made under their oversight. The Expanse is a dystopian sci-fi series set 200 years in the future that takes place in a colonized version of our solar system, including the planet Mars.
In addition to its outstanding Rotten Tomatoes score, The Expanse earned a solid 8.5 rating on IMDb, which places it in the number 239 spot on the Top 250 TV shows of all time. The series was developed for television by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the co-writers of acclaimed films such as Iron Man and Children of Men, and is based on the novels written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck.
The Expanse is led by main cast members Steven Strait (Chicago Fire), Dominique Tipper (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Wes Chatham (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), and Shohreh Aghdashloo (Star Trek Beyond). Additional cast members include Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises), Jared Harris (Mad Men), and Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad).
The Expanse Is So Much More Than “Game Of Thrones In Space”
The Expanse has drawn comparisons to the celebrated HBO series Game of Thrones for its similar plot structure, vast number of characters, and epic scale. That said, while Game of Thrones is an exceptional show to be compared to, The Expanse actually delivers in its final season, ensuring a satisfying viewing experience.
The Expanse is also incredibly immersive, like Game of Thrones, thanks to its fascinating story universe. The story begins with the threat of an interplanetary war brewing between Earth and Mars, which should excite fans of the Dune films and books, although this series feels a bit closer to home since it’s based on a fantastical (and futuristically plausible) version of our reality.
The Expanse’s Cancelations Robbed The Show Of Icon Status
The Expanse likely would have fared better had it started out on a premium network or if it had originated as an Amazon Prime Video series. Despite its critical acclaim, the series was criminally unrecognized and underappreciated, receiving zero Emmy or Golden Globe nominations.
That said, six seasons is still a pretty great run for one of the most underrated yet greatest sci-fi series of the past decade. It just never got the recognition that it deserved while it was releasing new episodes. All six seasons of The Expanse are only available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
