Prime Video’s unashamedly “anti-woke” action thriller series returns with a new prequel spin-off. But while the lead character has changed, the divide between critics and audiences remains the same. The series in question first began with The Terminal List starring Chris Pratt back in 2022, with the new spin-off, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, shifting focus from Pratt’s Navy SEAL to Taylor Kitch’s character, former Navy SEAL turned CIA agent Ben Edwards. The first reviews and reactions to Dark Wolf are now in and, much like its predecessor, the prequel has proven divisive.
The Terminal List: Dark Wolf now stands at a more middling 67% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a far more promising 91% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. So, while this isn’t quite as stark as the first series’ 40% and 94%, respectively, it does demonstrate that The Terminal List franchise has much more appeal to general viewers than it does to professional critics.
Alison Herman of Variety criticized the series for its shallow approach and hammering the viewer “with the simplistic image of good guy Americans versus “monsters at the door” over the finer points of geopolitical conflict.” Liam Mathews of TV Guide compared Dark Wolf unfavorably to its predecessor, concluding, “Dark Wolf lacks the revenge-fueled clarity of purpose that drove The Terminal List.” In a scathing review, Archi Sengupta of LeisureByte.com gave the series just 1.5/5 saying…
“The Terminal List: Dark Wolf doesn’t have what it takes to be a mindless entertaining nor is it unique enough to carve a path out for itself in the spy thriller genre.”
However, there’s some positivity too, with Collider’s Samuel R. Murrian awarding the show a near-perfect 9/10 and saying, “If anything, Dark Wolf is even better than the original series, compulsively bingeable and striking a balance between grittiness and escapism.”
Audiences Continue to Love ‘The Terminal List’ Franchise
As for audiences, a perfect five stars was awarded to The Terminal List: Dark Wolf by Rotten Tomatoes user Jonathan W. who said, “Really well done. Taylor Kitsch is great to watch. If you like terminal list, you’ll love this!” Echoing these sentiments is Bernard D, who adds, “Just like the first season of Terminal List, this show is series is simply fantastic.” But not everyone is on board, with one user calling the series “Propagandist nonsense, an insult to what actually happened.”
Based on characters from the 2018 novel “The Terminal List” by Jack Carr, and created by Carr and David DiGilio, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf stars Taylor Kitsch alongside Chris Pratt2, who returns in the prequel as James Reece. The rest of the cast includes Tom Hopper, Jared Shaw, Luke Hemsworth, Dar Salim, Robert Wisdom, and Rona-Lee Shimon.
