Predicted Newcastle team v Aston Villa for opening Premier League match

Looking at the Newcastle team v Aston Villa.

The NUFC players hoping to get off to the best possible start to the season.

We have had six friendlies so far, Newcastle United facing Carlisle, Celtic, Arsenal, Team K-League All Stars, Tottenham and Espanyol.

Now just today’s (Saturday 9 August 2025) home friendly with Atletico Madrid to go, before we get to the proper stuff.

So, what can we expect the Newcastle team v Aston Villa to be?

This is how I see Newcastle United lining up at 12.30pm next Saturday against Villa:

Nick Pope

Kieran Trippier

Fabian Schar

Dan Burn

Tino Livramento

Sandro Tonali

Bruno Guimaraes

Joelinton

Harvey Barnes

Anthony Gordon

Anthony Elanga

From what Eddie Howe had to say on Friday night, I can’t see Alexander Isak being available for selection.

In goal, Aaron Ramsdale could be the choice, but my money is on Nick Pope keeping the shirt for now.

At full-back, I think Trippier on the right and Tino the left. Lewis Hall is now back on the pitch but I think will be given a bit more time before Eddie Howe puts him back in as a starter.

Sven Botman has had injury issues and whilst he should be ok for the matchday squad, I reckon it will make Eddie Howe’s selection of Schar and Burn an easy one.

The midfield trio pick themselves.

Whilst up front, I don’t think Eddie Howe was ever starting the season with Will Osula through the middle. Instead I think that will be Anthony Gordon. He looked really good against Tottenham in a free role, through the middle but also allowed to wander. Gordon very likely will play there against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Barnes to come in on the left as Gordon through the middle, with Elanga on the right. However, I also wouldn’t be shocked if Eddie Howe started Jacob Murphy in this first match of the season, then brought Elanga off the bench.
