Peacock Cancels Kaley Cuoco’s ‘Based on a True Story’ After Two Seasons

We have some sad news today for fans of Peacock‘s Based on a True Story, as the streaming platform has given the ax to the dark comedy thriller after just two seasons. Starring The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco, the series featured her and Chris Messina as married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, who, after suffering a series of unfortunate life events, team up with a serial killer (Tom Bateman) to start a true-crime podcast.

Deadline reports that Based on a True Story won’t be returning for a third season. The eight-episode first season premiered in 2023, and was followed a year and a half later with another eight episodes in November 2024. At the time of its premiere, creator Craig Rosenberg told various outlets – including Peacock – that his goal was to create a show which examined America’s obsession with turning serial killers into celebrities.

“Over the last decade, a true crime phenomenon has swept over America. Podcasts, documentaries, fictional shows based on true stories — they dominate the culture. Murderers have become celebrities, and celebrities have become murderers which inspired me to create this show.

“I became fascinated with the idea of a relatable married couple whose youthful dreams hadn’t come to fruition and who saw the true crime tidal wave as an opportunity to change their lives and save their marriage. Our Los Angeles setting — the city where everybody wants to be famous — became a vivid backdrop to our story of fame, ambition, aspiration and murder.”

At the time Based on a True Story Season 2 came out, showrunner Annie Weisman told MovieWeb’s Greg Archer that she didn’t really see a limit as to how long the show could go on for, noting that at the end of the sophomore outing, the creators were “able to kind of tease a whole new mystery that could bring us back for another season.” Sadly, that’s not going to happen, despite Weisman adding: “I don’t see why we couldn’t continue that.”

More to come…
