Paul Walker and Jessica Alba’s ‘Into the Blue’ is Streaming Succes on Tubi

In between working on the early movies in the Fast & Furious franchise, the late Paul Walker
starred in the action thriller Into the Blue
. Now, 20 years later, the film has found its way onto the Tubi chart and leaped straight into the Top 5 as nostalgic fans revisit the popular actor’s 2005 team-up with Jessica Alba
.

Despite the movie being mostly panned by critics and not faring much better with audiences, the film falls into the category of free-to-stream action movies that seem to be everyone’s go-to viewing choice right now. That means Into the Blue is the latest decades-old movie to find its way in front of a whole new audience and is even finding a little more love from viewers.

Walker’s tragic death in 2013 has undoubtedly given his fans reason to savor all the actor’s movies. Now, it is the turn of Into the Blue, in which Walker played Jared, one half of a young couple caught in a battle for survival after discovering a crashed plane full of illegal cargo with their friends. As one of them makes a fateful decision about what to do with the drugs they find on the plane, it doesn’t take long for a gang of local criminals to get in on the action. At this point, Jared and his partner Sam (Alba) discover that their dreams of finding sunken treasure may not have been all they hoped for.

Is ‘Into the Blue’ Worth Watching on Tubi?

Sony

Directed by John Stockwell, who was best known for acting roles in movies like Top Gun and Christine before turning his hand to directing in the early 2000s, Into the Blue received plenty of praise for its visual backdrops of the Bahamas. However, if most of the discussion centers on the scenery, it’s likely because the rest of the movie isn’t worth talking about. That’s exactly how critics felt when reviewing it 20 years ago.

The film holds just a 20% Tomatometer score, making it one of Walker’s lowest-ranked films. The consensus reads: “Even the endless shots of bronzed beach babes and buffed dudes can’t keep this soggy scuba flick’s plot from drowning.” Reviews repeatedly cite the film’s “eye candy” visuals but dismiss it as “ultimately hollow.” Action movies are often light on nuance, focusing instead on how many blistering set pieces can be executed in a relatively short runtime.

However, audiences were more lenient with Into the Blue. Reviews from the past few years, as the film has circulated on various streaming platforms, have pushed its Popcornmeter score to 57%. While Walker and Alba’s performances weren’t award-worthy, their on-screen chemistry and “beach body” appeal hit the mark for audiences seeking something not too taxing on the brain.
