It’s finally happening! After a three-year hiatus, Stranger Things is returning for its highly anticipated final season, and Netflix just released a brand-new trailer with a ton of tiny breadcrumbs for us to comb through. Following that massive Season 4 cliffhanger, the fate of Hawkins has been on every fan’s mind, sparking an abundance of theories. Now that we have some actual scenes from Season 5 to dissect, I have some thoughts. Unfortunately, you probably won’t like them.
Given how high the stakes are now that we’ve reached the end, it’s clear not everyone is making it out alive, and that includes Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). I have no doubt that the good guys will ultimately prevail, but if the trailer is any indication, there will be a lot of casualties before it’s all over. The Upside Down has permeated Hawkins, and no one is safe. The question everyone should be asking now is who will inevitably pay the ultimate price?
What Does the Trailer for ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Reveal?
Everyone Is Fighting for Their Lives Now
Without a doubt, a lot is happening in Stranger Things’ Season 5 trailer. However, the key takeaway is that everyone is now in the fight, and Hawkins is at the center. The military might have commandeered the town, but that means nothing to a force like Vecna, who terrifyingly emerges topside at the end of the trailer. As our beloved characters stare in horror, Will (Noah Schnapp) is seen passed out on the ground, likely exhausted from trying to prevent their current reality from unraveling.

Aside from Vecna’s reemergence, the trailer hints at the fate of some characters. Nancy is seen washing blood off her hands as she cries, which could mean Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) or Steve (Joe Keery) somehow perishes. Fingers crossed, it’s not Steve. Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) appears to be haunted by Eddie’s (Joseph Quinn) death and looks like an emotional wreck, which could lead to impulsive and deadly decisions. There’s little doubt viewers will lose some of their favorite characters. However, I think one character in particular will pay the ultimate price in an effort to save his friends.
Will Is the Key To Defeating Vecna
And He’s Going To Sacrifice Himself To Save Hawkins
Will’s connection to the Upside Down has always been there, but it has yet to be fully explained. We’ve all seen the hair on the back of his neck stand numerous times when Vecna is near, and it’s showcased once again in the latest trailer. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) might have psychokinetic abilities, but it’s Will who holds the key to stopping Vecna once and for all. When combing through each clue in the trailer, it’s clear Will is fighting tooth and nail telepathically to stop Vecna.

This certainly isn’t a new theory, but now there’s no question in my mind. Without Will, Hawkins is certain to fall. He’s the only one who can finally put an end to the horror. Unfortunately, in doing so, he’ll pay the ultimate price. That being said, I do not doubt that he’ll sacrifice himself willingly and without hesitation if it means his friends are safe.
Only time will tell if this theory has any substance. Until then, we’ll just have to keep guessing. Stranger Things Season 5 will be released in three volumes on Netflix. The first four episodes will premiere on November 26, the following three episodes will premiere on December 25, and the finale episode will premiere on December 31. Each will arrive at 7:00 p.m. CST/8:00 p.m. EST.
