Gary O’Neil suffered his first defeat as Strasbourg head coach as his side fell to a 2-1 loss to champions Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.
Senny Mayulu opened the scoring for Luis Enrique’s men before Guela Doue levelled things up before the break.
Strasbourg had earlier missed a penalty and thought they might be in course to take all three points when Achraf Hakimi was sent off with 15 minutes left to play.
However, with nine minutes remaining, Nuno Mendes popped up to head home the winner for the 10-man Parisians.
The result lifts the European champions above Lens and into top spot. For Strasbourg and O’Neil, they remain in seventh.
How the action unfolded
Strasbourg had a glorious chance to take the lead on 20 minutes after they were awarded a penalty when the ball struck Marquinhos’ hand in the area.
Striker Joaquin Panichelli assumed spot-kick duties but his effort was saved by Matvey Safonov.
It seemed as though Enrique’s decision to leave some key personnel out for the clash at Stade de la Meinau might prove to be a costly one.
However, with the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue watching on from the bench, PSG opened the scoring just moments later.
After predictably having much of the ball in the opening stages, the Ligue 1 champions broke the deadlock courtesy of 19-year-old Mayulu in the 22nd minute.
But the advantage would last just five minutes when O’Neil’s men levelled things up after Guela Doue – older brother of Desire – found the net from former Chelsea’s full-back Ben Chilwell’s cross.
After the break, Strasbourg looked bright before PSG eventually regained control of the game despite being unable to break their opponents down.
With a quarter of an hour remaining, Hakimi was given his marching orders after VAR upgraded his booking for a challenge on Panichelli.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Parisians regained the lead shortly after when Nuno Mendes headed home Warren Zaire-Emery’s cross.
The 10-man visitors saw the rest of the game out to move back to the summit of the French top-flight.
