One of the Best Westerns of the 21st Century ‘Django Unchained’ Streams on Peacock This September

Who says the western genre is dead? Not Peacock, because the streaming service is adding one of the best Westerns of the 21st century to its streaming library. Hollywood might not make anywhere near as many westerns as it used to, but, with shows like Yellowstone and films like Hell or High Water and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs proving that fans still love a good gunslinging tale (albeit with the occasional modern twist), fans are occasionally treated to a new adventure in the Wild West. In 2012, fans of the genre were treated to arguably the best western of this century, which came to us via a beloved filmmaker, and it’s about to ride the plains onto a brand-new streaming home.

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained is set to begin streaming on Peacock this September. The film will be added to the streamer’s library on September 1. The film puts a modern twist on the classic 1996 film Django, directed by Sergio Corbucci and starring Franco Nero as the eponymous gunslinger. Tarantino’s version is largely inspired by the presence and name of the original character, as the plots of both movies are wildly different. The official synopsis for Django Unchained reads:

“Two years before the Civil War, Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave, finds himself accompanying an unorthodox German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) on a mission to capture the vicious Brittle brothers. Their mission successful, Schultz frees Django, and together they hunt the South’s most-wanted criminals. Their travels take them to the infamous plantation of shady Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), where Django’s long-lost wife (Kerry Washington) is still a slave.”

As does every Tarantino movie, Django Unchained features an all-star cast. Alongside Jamie Joxx in the leading role, the film also stars Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington, Walton Goggins, Don Johnson, Bruce Dern, and Jonah Hill. Django Unchained also continued Tarantino’s incredibly limited filmography, as it holds a great Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%. While critics enjoyed it, audiences loved Django Unchained even more, as it holds a 92% audience rating. It is also Tarantino’s highest-grossing film, earning over $425 million worldwide.

‘Django Unchained’ Is a Classic Revenge Story

Sony Pictures

It wouldn’t be a Tarantino film without bloody violence. While Django Unchained forgoes the excessive shots of people’s feet, it doesn’t shy away from brutal action, as the shootouts result in catastrophic blood splatters and people being launched across rooms due to the force.

Django Unchained doesn’t hold back with its retelling of the classic revenge tale. Will Smith famously turned down the role because he thought it was too violent, causing Jamie Foxx to step in and deliver a phenomenal performance as the former-slave-turned-bounty-hunter, Django Freeman. On his quest to save his wife, Broomhilda, from Calvin Candie, Django racks up a staggering body count, most of which comes from the final shootout at Candie’s mansion. Add to that the catchy and sharp dialogue that Tarantino is best known for, and there’s a reason why Django Unchained is one of the best westerns of the century.
