Game Of Thrones began its eight-season run as one of the most compelling, brutal, raunchy, and satisfying shows on TV in 2011. However, when Season 8 was released in 2019, the series had alienated many of those who had stuck with the story for almost a decade, and many of the cast were equally unimpressed with the way their character arcs were completed. It seems, though, one exception to that was Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark and was actually quite happy with how her story in the series ended.
It is hard to believe that it is now almost seven years since Game of Thrones reached its divisive conclusion without the guidance of a novel by George R.R. Martin (novels that still have not been written now). In the final episodes, characters like Jon Snow, Danerys Targaryen, and Bran Stark all had outcomes to their stories that fans just did not gel with, but when Sansa became the Queen of the North, Turner felt it was the right ending for her character.
Speaking to The Direct, Turner was asked about whether she would consider returning for one of the “many spinoffs” that Martin has teased in the last few months. While she joked they just had to “show me the money,” she added more seriously that it would be “hard” coming back. She went on to note how the divisive ending of the show was not necessarily one she had an issue with.
“But I feel that I was very happy with the way Sansa ended her story in ‘Game of Thrones,’ and no one else was really happy with their ending. I feel like I got a good one, and so I don’t know if I could revisit it.”
‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoffs Are Back in Fashion
When Game of Thrones ended in 2019, there were more than seven potential spinoffs being considered. Over the following years, most of those were scrapped, with only House of the Dragon rearing its head above the carnage of the flagship show’s eighth season to spread its wings.
Now, that prequel series is set to release its third season this year, with a fourth and final season coming in the next couple of years. Alongside that, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be released later this month, the second spinoff series to have been given the green light, and once again being based on written stories by Martin.
Towards the end of 2025, Martin said in a blog post that multiple prequels, sequels, and spinoffs are now once again being considered. While these do not seem to include the once-planned Jon Snow sequel, the tease could suggest that some characters from the original series may return in the future. For now, fans are eagerly awaiting January 18’s release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will either continue the redemption of the Game of Thrones franchise, or hammer another nail into its coffin.
