Another bonkers game at St James’ Park and another positive result, as Newcastle United needed penalties to dump Bournemouth out of the FA Cup after a 3-3 draw over 120 minutes.
Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in yesterday’s cup tie.
Ramsdale (7.5) – Only gets a 7.5 due to his heroics in the shootout, but looked shaky throughout and will be disappointed with the manner of the third goal, which he made a mess of. Hasn’t done enough to dislodge Pope.
Trippier (4) – Rough reintroduction to action with Trippier falling asleep at the wheel for Scott’s goal and being completely outpaced for the second. Had no impact going forward either. Rusty or showing his age?
Thiaw (6) – Much improved on the weekend (hardly saying much!) but was still part of a back four that leaked three goals. Buried his penalty in the shootout.
Botman (5) – Don’t think Botman playing 120 minutes was in the script but he managed to make it through physically unscathed. He was a long way from his best, often looking slow and unconvincing, but still managed to hit the bar and clear one off the line in extra time. Was partly at fault for the third goal by not taking command of the situation and will need to be better in that regard going forward.
Livramento (5) – Another one who looked well below his best and worryingly went off with yet another injury. Questions will have to be asked about the handling of his fitness this season as it’s been one setback after another. What must Alex Murphy be thinking sitting on the bench? Tino culpable for a golden opportunity which should’ve been buried by Evanilson after a sloppy giveaway.
Willock (4) – Was really pulling for a big performance today especially after the abhorrent racial abuse he received but unfortunately it was yet another poor performance from Willock. Looks a player who has lost all confidence in his ability and desperately needs a goal to kick start his season and possibly Newcastle career.
Tonali (7.5) – Started slowly with a few cheap giveaways but grew into the game especially in the second half and it was his burst into the box that led to the penalty. Wasn’t afraid to have a shot from distance which sets him apart from everyone else!
Ramsey (6.5) – As has been the pattern this season, started brightly and offered hope that we would start to see a return on the investment but faded as the game wore on. Much like Willock, needs a goal badly.
Barnes (8.5*) – Long may this purple patch continue! Another two goals to cap off a great week for Harvey who is quickly becoming our most potent attacking threat. Consistently causing the defence problems, should’ve got an assist for that brilliant cross to Gordon and has the right wing spot sewn up.
Woltemade (7) – Played in the number 10 role that we have been clamouring for and looked much more comfortable. Sublime through ball set up Barnes for the equaliser and his dummy at the end allowed Tonali to win the penalty. When he went back to centre forward after Wissa’s withdrawal he was noticeably less involved. Smashed his penalty against the bar in the shoot out.
Wissa (5) – Spurned opportunities that you’d expect a striker of his pedigree to finish. Feels like a missed opportunity to cement his spot ahead of Woltemade in the preferred formation as he had little to no impact in general play.
Hall (7) – Just a class act in possession. Still a few holes defensively to work on but the balance he brings to the attack can’t be ignored. Wonderful player.
Miley (7) – Turning into Mr Reliable at only 19. Fantastic talent and a great cameo off the bench filling in at right back. Could be his spot for the foreseeable with Tino going off injured.
Gordon (8) – Spark plug off the bench. Direct running caused Smith all sorts of problems and played the through ball which led to the penalty which he duly dispatched. Tremendous cross in extra time for Barnes second. Took his penalty well in the shoot out.
Joelinton (7.5) – Made a big impact when he came on with his physicality too much for a tiring Bournemouth midfield. Has shown a noticeable improvement in possession lately too. Headed over the bar in extra time.
Guimaraes (7) – Won possession and instigated attacks and very nearly had an assist for Joelinton who headed over the bar. Gets docked half a point for missing in the shoot out. Please get rid of the stuttering run up!!
