Onana will start for Manchester United against Lyon

Onana will start for Manchester United against Lyon

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim says Andre Onana will return to start in goal against Lyon on Thursday.

The Red Devils head into the Europa League quarter-final second leg drawing 2-2 with the French side.

Many believe Amorim’s side should be holding a lead heading back to Old Trafford, but for Onana’s poor mistakes in the first leg.

The performance came following a war of words with ex-Man Utd midfielder Nemanja Matic, who labelled Onana as “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.”

Onana was also dropped from the squad during United’s 4-1 loss to Newcastle on Sunday.

However, he will get the nod for the club’s biggest game of the season.

Speaking to the media, Amorim said: “Onana, he will play tomorrow.

“As a coach and former player first of all I try to do things that can help a player in this situation.

“We speak about managing players physically but we also have to manage them also mentally.

“We had one weekend where I felt it was better for Andre Onana not to play and a good thing for Altay [Bayindir] to play.”

Amorim was pressed on whether Manchester United will be searching for a new goalkeeper this summer, a question he did not take kindly too.

Instead, he diverted, insisting that securing Champions League football next term is the aim, with the Europa League the only remaining path to do so.

He added: “I think it is more about the budget. That is important when you are planning for the next season, Champions League can change everything.

“But you can see it both ways. Champions League it is tough to play against top teams on Wednesday and then at the weekend in the Premier League. If we don’t have Champions League, we have more time to build the team.”

Amorim also confirmed reports that Joshua Zirkzee will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury.

“Joshua [Zirkzee] is out for the season. He will not play more this season, let’s prepare him for the next one. It is tough for him especially in this moment. He is improving in all aspects and it is hard for any player to stop.”
