NWSL keeps Trinity Rodman in the US with new 3-year Washington Spirit deal

NWSL keeps Trinity Rodman in the US with new 3-year Washington Spirit deal

January 23 – After speculation that she was on the move to Europe and a Women’s Super League, the NWSL has hung on to one of its biggest with Trinity Rodman signing a new three-year deal with the Washington Spirit  with the club saying she will be “a franchise cornerstone in Washington, D.C. through the 2028 season.

Rodman’s future had been the subject of much speculation with NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman saying that it was vitally important that the league hung on to its biggest stars.

However, reports in the US also suggested that Berman has also nixed a contract worth more than $1 million per season, saying that it wasn’t in ‘the spirit of the league’ even though it didn’t break the league’s salary cap.

Those issues have now been overcome and while Washington Spirit didn’t reveal details, the did say that “the agreement stands as one of the most significant contracts in the NWSL and the women’s game worldwide, reflecting both Rodman’s elite status and the Spirit’s role as a global standard-bearer in women’s soccer.

“Trinity is absolutely critical to this club, to the NWSL and to women’s soccer,” said President of Soccer Operations Haley Carter. “She’s an elite athlete on the field, but she’s also a cultural force in DC, nationally and globally. As we build something sustainable here that our fans can be proud of, Trinity is a foundational piece of that.”

Rodman broke into the NWSL in 2021, earning NWSL Rookie of the Year honours, and providing the championship-winning assist in the 2021 NWSL Championship. She is the youngest player in league history to reach 50 career goal contributions, a two-time Ballon d’Or Féminin finalist and a 2024 NWSL MVP finalist.

Rodman spent much of the 2025 season sidelined with injury issues, playing in 15 NWSL games and scoring five goals and adding two assists. She returned from a knee injury at the end of the season but failed to make an impact off the bench as the Spirit fell 1-0 to Gotham FC in the league’s title game.

“I’ve made the DMV my home and the Spirit my family, and I knew this was where I wanted to enter the next chapter of my career,” said Rodman. “I’m proud of what we’ve built since my rookie season, and I’m excited about where this club is headed. We’re chasing championships and raising the standard.”
