Noah Wyle, the star of the acclaimed HBO Max series The Pitt, says “never say never” when it comes to cameos from his former castmates from ER. Wyle, who played Dr. John Carter on the NBC medical drama for almost ten years, has returned to the hospital floors as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
In an interview with Variety, Noah Wyle said that The Pitt’s success has garnered the attention of some “really high-profile actors” who want to make an appearance on the show. While he’s open to the idea, calling it “tempting”, Wyle said the guests could distract some viewers from the show itself. Read the rest of the quote below.
One of the great things about Cathy Sandrich, our casting director, is she brings in these people that you may know that work, but you don’t necessarily bring their intended baggage to the role that they’re playing for us; you’re able to believe them totally in the situation that we’re presenting. I feel like that’s a model that’s worth playing out as long as we can.
[But] if there’s a role that requires somebody that has some real gravitas, that requires bringing somebody that would have a frame of reference,” Wyle adds, “that’s really when it’s fun to bring those people in.
ER Cameos On The Pitt Seems Like A No-Brainer For Season Two
Noah Wyle and The Pitt received critical acclaim from viewers and critics alike, with some calling it the most medically accurate show on television. Wyle now holds the distinction of starring in two popular medical dramas, with ER being one of the most popular shows of the 1990s.
One of the biggest names The Pitt could bring in from Wyle’s ER days is George Clooney, who played Dr. Doug Ross in the first five seasons of the show. Clooney could and would be a major casting coup for The Pitt, as there’s nothing quite like an A-list actor stopping by for a cameo.
Another fantastic cameo appearance for The Pitt would be Eriq La Salle, who played Dr. Peter Benton in ER’s first eight seasons. Benton was Carter’s mentor throughout their time together, and seeing the two reunited on the small screen would be a welcome return for both ER and The Pitt fans.
With The Pitt’s popularity, it’s not out of bounds to see some popular and prolific actors and actresses appear on the show. Although ER and The Pitt are drastically different shows, fans of the medical drama would be in store for some fun call backs to a trendsetting show.
Landing an Eriq La Salle cameo would be the most ideal choice creatively, as the chemistry he and Wyle had on ER was pitch-perfect. While George Clooney would be the biggest name ER alum The Pitt could receive, landing any number of ER‘s familiar faces would be an ideal scenario.
Another aspect that would be a fun exploration for an ER alum is the unrestricted creative ability a streaming platform provides. With a TV-MA rating, ER guest stars can explore more nuanced and potentially volatile story arcs in The Pitt that would allow the cameos to take a much wider depth than they could touch on ER.
