This is why I kept my hype for Spider-Noir all this time.
I was one of the few who was high on Spider-Noir since the initial announcement (R.I.P. Silk: Spider-Society). A grim and dark alternate Spider-Man story set around World War II and incorporates weird versions of classic villains. I was all for it – and then they threw Nicolas Cage into the mix? I’m done – I’m looking to get an MGM+ subscription, as we speak. Then yesterday, we got shots of the suit provided by TMZ and wow. . it is so comic book accurate. As you can see, I am marking out a lot, but this is why I kept my attention this whole time. You should too.
Spider-Man Noir was first introduced in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 2009. Part of the Marvel Noir universe, aka Earth-90214, this alternate version of the superhero is a noir-themed take on the beloved character and fights crime in New York during the Great Depression. Unlike his original namesake, Spider-Man Noir was bitten by a spider that emerged from a spider-god idol while attempting to bring down a smuggling ring. Much like the original Peter Parker, Noir was imbued with super-human abilities based on a spider, and ultimately becomes a masked vigilante as he wages a one-man war on crime.
The series will take inspiration from the character’s origins while aging him up to follow a down-on-his-luck private investigator operating in an alternate 1930s New York City who, while struggling to tackle rising crime, returns to his former superhero persona.
Nicolas Cage & Brendan Gleeson Are Sure To Make a Formidable Pairing in ‘Spider-Noir’
Developed by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who are on board as showrunners, Spider-Noir stars Lamorne Morris and Brendan Gleeson alongside Cage. The series also stars Brick and Inception actor Lukas Haas, who recently revealed details of his character to MovieWeb’s own Will Sayre, as well as heaping praise on both Nicolas Cage and Brendan Gleeson.
“It was a really, really cool project to be a part of. I had a great time working on that. Nic is so cool and awesome. And Brendan Gleeson is amazing. He plays my boss. And it’s really an authentic film noir, you know, the way they filmed it. In fact, even the monitors, like, playback — it was in black and white, and with the shadows […] It really felt like you were watching yourself in the 1930s, the way that they made the look of the video.
The story is great. The writing is great, everybody involved. And I’m super-excited about it. I know it’s going to take a while before that comes out, but I’m waiting with anticipation because I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Nicolas Cage, meanwhile, previously offered some insight into the series, calling Spider-Noir “more Golden Age,” adding, “I wanted to have that kind of aura, you know, like the more enigmatic, you don’t know too much. That’s why I’m not on social media. That’s the thinking, anyway. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens if I do [Spider-Man Noir], and they put me in black-and-white. We’ll see if we can get some of that flavor.”
